as you may already know, i rent my cottage in laguna beach and it’s registered with the historical society as a spanish revival built in 1929. i couldn’t love it more, but my small kitchen needed just a bit of an update to both brighten it up and to add some much-needed storage without touching its original elements, like the colored tile coutertops and terracotta floors. so when in need of storage space in a small kitchen the best thing to solve that issue is to go up — with vertical storage such as open shelving, and in this case a vintage glass display cabinet. i had a carpenter make free-floating shelving that’s well-anchored to the wall so i could display my (too many!) collectibles, like vintage pottery and serving pieces. painted white, they blend in nicely and create a nice open, airy feeling to the kitchen. next up, i found a great vintage cabinet on etsy at decor pasadena and i know it’s almost blasphemous, but i painted it white so it would blend in well with the existing kitchen cabinetry. it’s got nice glass doors so i can display some of my prettiest glassware and dishes and on top of it, my favorite japanese cookware — a donable pot and yaki yaki san stovetop grill, both from toiro kitchen, a wonderful shop that carries all kinds of great japanese cookware and accessories.

it’s a funky little kitchen, so i’m going for kind of a wabi-sabi feeling — embracing the aesthetic of things in existence, that are “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” — essentially finding beauty in every aspect of imperfection. so just for fun, i added a paper japanese lantern over the existing light fixture. i find all my beloved paper lanterns at bunkado in l.a.’s little toyko, but you can find them online as well on etsy or pearl river. i also made some new window curtains from some turkish towels i found at the lumia. they carry some really soft and beautiful collections! it was easy — i simply cut the towels in half and added a hem at the top. then i used these Curtain Rings with Clips and hung them from the existing curtain rod. i also added a white Cotton Rag Rug from h&m home and some of my favorite dish towels from merci paris.

other additions were a white Smeg tea Kettle to match my big chill retro fridge and Classic Retro stovetop range. i wanted to keep the artwork simple and in black & white, so i hung some of my favorites art prints from hotel magique. i also created a little cocktail bar just on top of the fridge using a black cocktail tray from pottery barn. fresh fruits are displayed in a pedestal bowl from jayson home. the flea market moroccan shopping tote is from super marché displayed on a Mariella bamboo rack i found at urban outfitters. i stash extra dish towels and my apron in the tote bag for more extra storage. my cookbook stand is a favorite marble one i found on west elm and my bamboo wine rack is vintage from etsy — there are some great finds on there if you like something a little more unique and special to display your wine and we have a really pretty (and portable) vintage bamboo bar in the shop right now that also doubles as a picnic carrier. the riviera bamboo counter stools are from serena & lily.  i think that’s all the resources, but if you have any questions do let me know!
