Everyone is familiar with Disney’s trademark art style. Their beloved animated characters often have cute, diminutive features with large, expressive eyes. These proportions make them appear more cartoon-like than realistic, which gave one artist an idea for a twist on Disney convention. In her ongoing project, California-based illustrator Holly Fae reimagines famous Disney princesses and other characters with more lifelike proportions.
Fae started the series by transforming the starlet sisters of Frozen, Elsa and Anna. Using the Procreate app on her iPad, she altered the princesses’ childlike features by elongating their faces and making their eyes smaller. Then, the digital artist shared videos of her process on her TikTok which quickly garnered millions of views and likes.
After receiving so much positive feedback, Fae continued updating characters from other Disney movies, like Moana, Rapunzel (from Tangled), and Merida (from Brave). “The initial Elsa video was really on a whim, but since that one, I’ve put a lot of care into each transformation, especially in the case of Moana and Jasmine,” Fae says. “I spent lots of time looking at photos of women of their ethnicities because I wanted to get the features right.” The illustrator intends to continue her makeover series until she’s updated all of the princesses, including Mulan and Snow White.
You can purchase Fae’s art via her Etsy shop, and keep up to date with her latest creations by following her on TikTok and Instagram.
