Step inside Avian Apartment by Alicia Holgar and you will find yourself immediately at ease. What inevitably follows is a sense of wonder as you take in the sweeping curves, evocative art and impressive furnishings. This refurbished apartment is surprising, but not in the ways you would expect. Its beauty derives from its individuality, a calm palette and the deft application of custom-made pieces.

Located within an iconic Harry Seidler building in Brisbane, the interior scheme expands upon the fluid architectural form with a “European aesthetic, Australian ethic and with art as an integrated expression of ingenuity,” explains Holgar. She worked closely with the clients in giving this apartment a refresh and purposeful face-lift rather than a major overhaul. The kitchen and bathrooms were left untouched, but the task still involved the removal of all furniture (which was subsequently donated to charity), and selections of new light fittings, colour scheme, wall finishes, floor finishes, hardware, tapware and joinery. Of course, there was also the crucial mix of new, antique and custom-designed furniture, soft furnishings and artwork.

One of the main spatial challenges was interpreting the entirely open floor plan. Expressive curved walls have been used to both unify spaces and functionally divide them. The integration of the television and books within the lounge area was particularly laboured upon. After several iterations, the result is a spectacular full length contoured and cantilevered wall which houses the television seamlessly with two solid American oak bookshelves floating beneath.

The most staggering feature of this home is undoubtedly the careful curation of objects, furniture and art throughout. It is all so mind-blowingly good it could almost make you weep!

Many of the key pieces were custom designed by Holgar herself including the beds, sofa and cushions covered in South Pacific Fabrics; the layered and cantilevered granite coffee table; and the solid American oak bedside joinery, dining table and study desk. “Spending time onsite, feeling out each space and designing custom pieces to suit,” was the designer’s methodology. “Artistically, I was inspired by Seidler and Le Corbusier’s early approach to integrating art through sculptural forms and organic murals,” explains Holgar.

DenHolm’s sculptural table inspired by famed American sculptor Norman Carlberg is a pivotal piece that invigorates the entry space. LA artist Jessalyn Brooks flew in to create two painted mural called ‘The Avians’ which references the apartment’s life above the clouds.

Outstanding custom pieces are accompanied by a knockout furniture collection. In the lounge, an Elna side table by ParkerWorks sits alongside a Walter Knoll Foster 520 High Back Armchair and the iconic Wiggle Side Chair by Frank Gehry – all statement pieces that somehow co-exist in harmony.craft

Avian Apartment is a revelation and a reminder that apartment interiors do not have to prescribe to straight walls and conventional spatial arrangements. Instead, Holgar has designed a home that is “enriched by a sculptural sophistication that adds new layers of depth, light and shade.” It is luxurious and innovative with a deep respect for craftsmanship and quality.
