Using various tools ranging from Crayola and Tombow Markers to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, David Milan is a Spain-based independent lettering artist, illustrator and designer whose work features bright colours, 3D elements and bold statements.

With a past life as a graffiti writer, he describes his artistic process in two simple words: “always playing”. This sentiment has led him to discover new pathways and mediums for his lettering art, including his eye-popping 3D work and using new tools like Cinema4D. “I love exploring new techniques, not getting stuck in just one style or concept – always creating something different,” says David. “I see letters from another perspective; I like to get away from the ‘perfect’ concept that lettering and typography have these days. I think it can be fun and weird at the same time.”

Though he is currently working on personal projects – learning new skills, mastering his craft and sharing within his social networks – his clients include Facebook, Adobe, Pepsi, Washington Post, NBC and Crocs.

What stands out about his work, and what we imagine keeps this list of big-name clients coming back for more, is the intentional combination of organic and seemingly surreal elements in his pieces. “I like working with real tools, sometimes leaving the digital side. I usually use brushes with acrylic paints and make phrases or letters. Seeing the real organic texture is amazing,” David adds.

Although the pandemic has left many of us cooped up at home, David has found a new stroke of inspiration. When asked how he stays motivated during uncertain times, David identifies two main elements: “Inspiration comes as long as you have good music and a good studio. I think your workspace helps to inspire you, and for that reason, I think the pandemic has helped me to improve my talents.”
