It began as a way to challenge themselves and bring their mutual love of graphic design and movies together; now Belgian couple Sarah Schrauwen and Mathieu Vancamp are enjoying their fourth year of Double Bill Posters, a self-initiated project that began in 2018 and has since evolved.

As graphic designers, they wanted to have something away from client briefs and an “exercise in quick thinking and doing,” as they tell Creative Boom. In the first 12 months, they picked one film each week that they would watch together and each design an individual poster for. To get the creative juices flowing within set boundaries, they came up with this set of rules: they could spend only one hour on concept and execution, use only type and/or illustration, and use no more than three colours.

But the following year, they created two posters every month for two different films in the same genre. “One of the films was recent, the other was old(er),” Sarah says. “To get a good global range, we picked an American/Hollywood film and a foreign film every month.”

Last year, they decided to design the posters together or edit each other’s designs. “The set of rules became less strict and we also add more information to the posters,” Sarah says. “We also had two guest artists who each made a poster: Pieter Boels and Geert Verbist.”

For 2021, the focus for Double Bill Posters is on notable directors. “We’re doing our very best to select a diverse group of well-known icons and new talent from across the globe. Every fortnight, we create two posters for one director: two ‘double bills’ every month.” Recent movies include Blade Runner 2049 and Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation.

Both Sarah and Mathieu hope to create a mini-series of posters that reflect each director’s style, either by using the same design elements – fonts, colours, composition – or by using the same medium to create the design, including illustrations, drawings and stills.
