The unique character of London is being celebrated in a new book by British photographer Josh Edgoose, featuring all the serendipitous interactions that happen every day on its iconic streets but which usually go unnoticed.

In Brilliant Parade, published by Setanta Books, we see a visual document that spans fives years of Josh observing and photographing the encounters and moods of the capital city.

The pictures capture the locals and tourists all thrown together in various moods against ever-changing scenes and colourful backdrops – Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the London Underground, they’re all there. Charming and quirky, they give us a clear insight into the frenzied pace of London and a raw, honest and often humorous account of one of the best cities in the world.

“I like to look for humour, emotions, gestures, bold colours and the serendipitous,” Josh tells Creative Boom. “I also think London has a very unique colour palette. Primary colours seem to be everywhere, also the juxtapositions of the old and the new.”

As the book’s description reads: “Edgoose strived to organise the chaotic scenes in order to discover the disposition of a city that contains everything in its vast magnitude. Edgoose takes the different pieces of this metropolis and seamlessly puts them together, showing us its secrets.”

Are there any shots that stand out for him the most? “Probably the one of the guy backflipping off the elephant statue at Marble Arch,” Josh says. “His dad was furious with him for doing it, he saw that I took a picture and came up to me afterwards and said something like, ‘Can’t take him anywhere, he has to backflip off everything’.”

“I also like the shot of the bus; I like the wide range of expressions and how your eye can travel across the frame,” he adds.
