If you’re a sports fan in the market for a new streaming platform that’ll give you access to sport and only sport, Optus Sport is a fine choice – for soccer fans… Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know about Optus Sport before you subscribe.

What is Optus Sport?

Optus Sport is a dedicated sports streaming platform that provides users with on-demand and live streams of various different soccer/football matches as well as pre-match press conferences and soccer documentaries.

Launched by Optus, the Australian telecommunications company, on the 13th of July 2016, Optus Sport has come a long way since its inception. Optus Sport currently owns the broadcasting rights to the English Premier League in Australia, making it the only streaming platform where you can watch what many consider to be the greatest soccer league in the world.

And that is set to continue for the foreseeable, as Optus extended its contract in December 2021 to continue owning the rights to the English Premier League for another 5 years.

Away from just showing the EPL, Optus Sport offers 24/7 programming which includes news, interviews and analysis from various soccer experts.

If you’re unable to watch soccer matches live, then Optus Sport offers multiple ways to catch up on the all the action. You can either choose to watch the entire 90-minute match in full as a replay, a Quick 3-minute highlight reel, a Short 9-minute match, a Mini 25-minute match or a Mega 45-minute match. You also get the option of turning on ‘No Spoilers’, so the final score is hidden from view.

However, it must be said that Optus Sport is only likely to appeal to hardcore soccer fans, as there isn’t really any other sport to watch through the service. If you want a more complete sports streaming service, you may want to invest your money with Kayo instead, as it offers a wide range of different sports, not just soccer.

How much is Optus Sport?

Optus Sport recently changed its subscription model. For a while, it was only available to Optus Mobile customers as a free add-on with selected mobile plans. But now, regardless of which mobile operator you’re with, you can now sign-up to Optus Sport with a separate subscription.

Optus Sport has two pricing options to choose from.

  • Monthly – $14.99 per month
  • Annually – $139 per year; which works out to be $11.58 per month

However, these are the current prices. Optus recently announced that their prices will change from August 1st. The new charges will be:

  • Monthly – $24.99/month
  • Annually – $199/year

Even if you sign up now, your monthly or annual cost will automatically change. Eligible Optus Mobile customers (who currently get Optus Sport for free) will also be charged, $6.99/month from August 1st.

Optus says the price increases are necessary in order for them to “maintain our commitment to adding even more premium sports content and innovation as we invest further over the coming years.”

If you’re an Optus customer and you continue to subscribe to Optus Sport, it will be added to Optus’ SubHub feature. This allow you to bundle together a range of subscription-based add-ons, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. If you choose three or more services to bundle together within Optus SubHub, you can save 10% on the total subscription fee.

If you’re not an Optus Customer, then your subscription will be managed either via your website login, or your Apple App Store or Google Play Store account.

Despite the price increases, Optus Sport currently only offers up to 720p video quality for its streams. However, from August 1st, that will increase to full HD 1080p, putting it on par with Kayo Sports.

If you want to stream sport in 4K Ultra-High Definition, then you’ll need to check out Foxtel.

Also, Optus Sport can only be streamed on one device at a time.

Optus Sport free trial
