Building a tiny home is a great step in helping you to live the minimalist lifestyle you’ve always wanted to live. But if you don’t have much experience with building, there will definitely be a learning curve and some challenges along the way. Most people opt to build a tiny home themselves with minimal professional help because it is much easier than building a larger structure, and this helps to save a ton of money on costs. Of course, doing it yourself will require countless hours of research and a bunch of trial and error. If you’re up for building your own tiny home, here are some of the most important things you should consider.

Roofing

If you choose to build your tiny home out of shipping containers, you may not have to install a roof on top, but some people choose to just for extra protection from the elements. Roofs are difficult to build and can be very expensive to fix if they become damaged, so it might be a good idea for you to talk to a roof specialist even if you plan to build the rest of your tiny home yourself.

Location

Deciding where to build your tiny home is the first important decision you’ll have to make. If you already own a piece of land, you may be able to build it there, but just be sure to check local building restrictions first. Another option is to build your home at a different location than the one you plan to move it to. One of the perks of tiny homes is that they don’t have to be permanent structures – they can be built on trailers and taken wherever you want them to go.

Costs

Although building a tiny home is significantly cheaper than buying or building any other type of house, there are still costs involved. Make sure you research everything ahead of time so that you don’t run out of money before having a chance to finish building your new digs.

Space

It goes without saying that most tiny homes are, well— tiny. But some, of course, are larger than others. One thing to figure out while planning out your new home is exactly how much space you will need. Living minimally is a huge part of the draw, so try to let go of any belongings you don’t think you’ll have room for. That being said, you will likely need a bathroom, a place to cook food, a place to sleep, and a little storage space. Keep these things in mind, plus any additional needs you may personally have, when beginning to build.

Building and moving into a tiny home will be one of the most rewarding things you have ever experienced! Enjoy the adventure and stress less by using the above tips.
