In Kerala’s tropical climate, the relationship between inside and outside is complex. Whilst heat, humidity and intense sunlight demand protection, closing a house off entirely comes at the expense of light and connection to landscape. For The House Veiled in Brick, LIJO.RENY.architects addresses this balance with a continuous brick screen that wraps the home while allowing it to remain open.

Completed in 2023 in Thrissur, the 383-square-metre residence is organised around a series of courtyards and outdoor rooms, all contained within a permeable brick envelope. The screen provides privacy from neighbouring properties while filtering sunlight and encouraging cross ventilation, allowing the house to respond passively to Kerala’s climate.

The arrival sequence introduces this approach immediately. Entered from the north, visitors move through a shaded sit-out and entry court before arriving at a generous open-to-sky courtyard that forms the centre of the home. Here, a brick screen on the western edge softens the afternoon sun while maintaining airflow and visual connection to the outdoors.

Running alongside the courtyard, a 12-metre stretch of sliding doors and windows allows the living spaces to open completely when conditions permit or remain closed while preserving views into the landscaped court. The result is a house that adapts throughout the day, responding to weather, privacy and occupation without relying solely on mechanical systems.

The brick veil continues across the eastern and western elevations, creating deep transitional zones outside bedrooms and living spaces. These shaded pockets act as extensions of the interior while reducing direct solar gain. Sliding shutters positioned within the screened façade further regulate ventilation, light and privacy, giving occupants flexibility without compromising the architectural language of the home.

Inside, the planning remains deliberately restrained. Living, dining and family spaces flow into one another, while secondary courtyards punctuate circulation routes, drawing daylight deep into the plan and encouraging natural air movement between rooms. Upstairs, a shared television room can also function as guest accommodation, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on adaptable family living.

Materiality is similarly pared back. with exposed brickwork and raw concrete defining the architecture and allowing structure to become the primary expression of the project. Internally, natural finishes and a muted palette place greater emphasis on changing light, shadow and views into the courtyards than on decorative elements.

While the brick screen establishes a distinct identity for the house, it also performs as environmental infrastructure. By filtering sunlight, encouraging passive cooling and creating a series of intermediary spaces between indoors and outdoors, it demonstrates how a single architectural element can address climate, privacy and spatial experience simultaneously.

Rather than treating the façade as a boundary, The House Veiled in Brick uses it as a filter — one that mediates between house and landscape while shaping the experience of everyday life.
