Design Tasmania is proud to announce Tasmania Makes 25, a celebration of Tasmanian design excellence presented across two exhibitions. The first took place from 24 January to 25 May 2025, and the second will debut from 1 June to 21 September 2025.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Design Tasmania’s Collecting Policy, Tasmania Makes 25 spotlights 16 contemporary Tasmanian designers working across furniture, lighting, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, glass and object design. Curated by Design Tasmania in partnership with industry leaders committed to sustainable production, the exhibitions reflect a uniquely Tasmanian approach to making.

A quarter century of craft

This dual showcase unfolds across Design Tasmania’s exhibition spaces, with ‘Tasmania Makes’ tracing the evolution of contemporary practice and ‘Tasmania Makes: Legacy; exploring the legacy of the organisation’s storied collection. Together, the exhibitions underscore Tasmania’s position as a national design force – and the role Design Tasmania continues to play in cultivating it.

Tasmania Makes 25 is presented in collaboration with local partners, including Hydrowood, Tamar Joinery, Southwood Home and Domain Gallery. Each brings a shared commitment to sustainable making and meaningful investment in the state’s creative industries.

Amongst the featured artists, Patrick Senior showcases his finely resolved timber furniture that speaks to the quiet drama of Tasmanian materials; Ellie Malin exhibits her joyful ceramic forms that draw on a painter’s sensibility; and Annalise Rees displayes her works in glass and paper that explore navigation, place and the shifting boundaries between disciplines.

Tasmania Makes 25 is generously supported by a circle of local partners whose commitment to sustainable practice and materials innovation continues to shape the future of design and manufacturing in Tasmania. From timber and textiles to digital fabrication, these collaborations reflect the same values – curiosity, craft and community – that define the makers they support.
