when it comes to collecting art, personal taste is everything. perhaps, like me, it’s the vintage-inspired pieces that catch your eye, or maybe it’s modern artwork that speaks to your soul. the very beauty of art lies in its subjective nature, allowing each individual to curate a collection that reflects their own unique style. i just read a beautiful book, still life by sarah winman, about the art world in florence, italy and it got me thinking about this very subject, and how our personal tastes vary so extremely.

when building an art collection — either high-end or low-brow (inexpensive art is not bad art), it’s important to consider your personal preferences. what colors and hues resonate with you? do you lean towards abstract or realistic pieces? by following your instincts and choosing artwork that resonates with you on a very personal level, you’ll create a collection that brings joy and inspiration into your space — and that’s always the goal, in my opinion. if you like it, that’s good enough for me.

remember, collecting art is not about following trends or seeking validation from others. it’s about cherishing pieces that speak to you and evoke emotions. whether you’re drawn to vibrant pop-art or prefer serene, photographic landscapes, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to personal taste in art. trust your gut, explore different styles, and create a collection as unique as you are. for art resources online, visit my favorites here. and if you’re as big an art lover as i am, i’m welcoming new subscribers with an art appreciation discount right now.
