September is here and the semester is underway. And fortunately, the learning opportunities aren’t limited to enrolled students, with universities across North America kicking off their architecture and design lecture series for the new term. From must-see virtual and hybrid talks to more intimate in-person gatherings, we round up some of the most anticipated public programs for fall 2022.

University of Waterloo School of Architecture

Organized under the theme of “Praxes of Care: Communication,” the University of Waterloo School of Architecture’s Arriscraft Speaker Series brings together a diverse range of designers and thought leaders with an aim to expand design thinking to centre issues such as the right to healthcare, citizen power in informal cities and listening as architectural practice. Both in-person and online talks are planned. Speakers include David Fortin, Lori Brown, Allison Killing and Wandile Mthiyane.

Yale School of Architecture

On September 22, Canadian architect Brigitte Shim comes to Yale University to deliver a talk titled “The Passage of Time.” The internationally celebrated designer (who recently completed Toronto’s much lauded Ace Hotel) joins the likes of Daniel Liebeskind, Xu Tiantian and Claire Weisz (to name a few) in this year’s fall lecture series.

University of Toronto, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

Book talks, panel sessions, lectures and symposia comprise the Daniels Faculty’s fall 2022 public program. And the topics are just are varied as the formats, ranging from the landscapes of Claude Cormier to feminist architectural histories of migration. On September 15, Marina Tabassum kicks off the fall series with a lecture on the “Architecture of Transition.”

Rice University School of Architecture

Always free and open to the public, Rice University’s inclusive fall program is focused on the timely topic of “Engaging Pluralities.” Talks by the likes of Walter Benn Michaels, Rozana Montiel and Margarita Jover are complemented by the faculty book launch on October 26: “Nueva Vivienda—New Housing Paradigms in Mexico,” led by Jesús Vassallo and Sebastián López Cardozo.

Tulane University School of Architecture

Architect and academic Peggy Deamer kicks off this year’s progam with “Re-Working Work,” a talk interrogating the exploitative nature of architectural labour and the institutions that shape it. The fall 2022 design lecture schedule continues with talks by Shalini Agrawal, Kate Wagner and Jenny E. Sabin.

OCAD University

Integrating art and design education, Toronto’s OCAD University offers an appropriately multi-disciplinary line-up of talks and events. On September 15, Indigenous Peruvian artist Olinda Reshijabe Silvan explores how Indigenous practitioners around the world can confront the climate crisis and resist neo-colonial incursion. Part of the Mi’kmaq by Design Lecture Series, Julia Rose Sutherland’s September 26 talk explores how the artist weaves L’nu visual culture and history into contemporary practice.

Cooper Union, Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture

On campus and online, the fall program features “designers, artists, theorists, and researchers from New York and around the world.” Held in-person in Lower Manhattan and streamable via Zoom around the world, the series features talks by Moshe Safdie, Tatiana Bilbao, Annabel Wharton, Eve Blau, Kiel Moe and Maria Giudici.

Southern California Institute of Architecture

Earlier this year, a SCI-Arc talk made headlines, with Tom Wiscombe and Marrika Trotter’s celebration of the 60-hour workweek prompting a speedy apology. But while the fallout offered up a timely indictment of architectural work culture, it also highlighted the resonance of the school’s speaker series. Hosted in-person at SCI-Arc’s Los Angeles campus, the fall line-up features Zhu Pei, Garrett Jacobs, Michael Rotondi, Neil Denari, Deborah Garcia, Behnaz Farahi, and Mariana Ibañez. Pei’s October 12 talk will also be available via a live-stream.

Toronto Metropolitan University, Department of Architectural Science

Alfred Waugh is the first Indigenous Architect to receive Canada’s prestigious the Governor’s General Medal in Architecture. On October 27, his lecture at TMU’s DAS will focus on the integration of Indigenous and Western epistemology in contemporary architectural practice. Equally immersed in knowledge of the land and of Turtle Island’s cultural history, Waugh’s ethos is predicated on the idea that all things — plants, animals, earth and sky as well as humans — are connected.

Harvard Graduate School of Design

Mark your calendars: James Wines is coming on November 1. The inimitable artist, architect and environmental designer is just one of the highlights of a busy public talks schedule at Harvard’s GSD. Sascha Delz, Mel Y. Chen and Wanda Dalla Costa are also participating in the fall 2022 design lectures. The series wraps up on November 17 with Aleksandra Jaeschke’s Wheelwright Prize Lecture, “In Emergency Break Glass.”

University of Calgary, School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape

SAPL’s Design Matters lecture series returns on September 21, with a talk by California-based landscape architect — and TERREMOTO founder — Jenny Jones. The talk will be paired with the launch of SAPL professor Fabian Neuhaus’ book, Voices from the Digital Classroom: 25 Interviews about Teaching and Learning in the Face of a Global Pandemic. Additional talks and events will be announced throughout the term.

Additional design lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, workshops, conferences and more for fall 2022 and beyond are available via AZURE’s Events listings.
