September is here and the semester is underway. And fortunately, the learning opportunities aren’t limited to enrolled students, with universities across North America kicking off their architecture and design lecture series for the new term. From must-see virtual and hybrid talks to more intimate in-person gatherings, we round up some of the most anticipated public programs for fall 2022.
Organized under the theme of “Praxes of Care: Communication,” the University of Waterloo School of Architecture’s brings together a diverse range of designers and thought leaders with an aim to expand design thinking to centre issues such as the right to healthcare, citizen power in informal cities and listening as architectural practice. Both in-person and online talks are planned. Speakers include David Fortin, Lori Brown, Allison Killing and Wandile Mthiyane.
On September 22, Canadian architect Brigitte Shim comes to Yale University to deliver a talk titled “The Passage of Time.” The internationally celebrated designer (who recently completed Toronto’s l) joins the likes of Daniel Liebeskind, Xu Tiantian and Claire Weisz (to name a few) in this year’s .
Book talks, panel sessions, lectures and symposia comprise the Daniels Faculty’s . And the topics are just are varied as the formats, ranging from the landscapes of Claude Cormier to feminist architectural histories of migration. On September 15, Marina Tabassum kicks off the fall series with a lecture on the “Architecture of Transition.”
Always free and open to the public, Rice University’s is focused on the timely topic of “Engaging Pluralities.” Talks by the likes of Walter Benn Michaels, Rozana Montiel and Margarita Jover are complemented by the faculty book launch on October 26: “Nueva Vivienda—New Housing Paradigms in Mexico,” led by Jesús Vassallo and Sebastián López Cardozo.
Architect and academic Peggy Deamer kicks off this year’s with “Re-Working Work,” a talk interrogating the exploitative nature of architectural labour and the institutions that shape it. The fall 2022 design lecture schedule continues with talks by Shalini Agrawal, Kate Wagner and Jenny E. Sabin.
Integrating art and design education, Toronto’s OCAD University offers an appropriately multi-disciplinary line-up of talks and events. Indigenous Peruvian artist Olinda Reshijabe Silvan explores how Indigenous practitioners around the world can confront the climate crisis and resist neo-colonial incursion. Part of the Mi’kmaq by Design Lecture Series, explores how the artist weaves L’nu visual culture and history into contemporary practice.
On campus and online, the features “designers, artists, theorists, and researchers from New York and around the world.” Held in-person in Lower Manhattan and streamable via Zoom around the world, the series features talks by Moshe Safdie, Tatiana Bilbao, Annabel Wharton, Eve Blau, Kiel Moe and Maria Giudici.

SAPL’s lecture series returns on September 21, with a talk by California-based landscape architect — and TERREMOTO founder — Jenny Jones. The talk will be paired with the launch of SAPL professor Fabian Neuhaus’ book, Voices from the Digital Classroom: 25 Interviews about Teaching and Learning in the Face of a Global Pandemic. Additional talks and events will be announced throughout the term.
