Every September, the architecture and design community gathers in Bologna for Cersaie, the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings. Founded in 1983, the annual celebration of all things tile welcomes over 100,000 visitors from 160 countries to discover the latest trends, formats and innovations from more than 600 international manufacturers. Taking place from September 22-26, 2025, the event promises to be a locus of sensory exploration — from bold colours to sculptural textures and tactile finishes — and an opportunity to connect with leading brands in ceramics, porcelain and sanitaryware.

Honouring its heritage of traditional craftsmanship while pushing the boundaries of technology, the Italian ceramics industry has proven a force to be reckoned with. Whether producing increasingly thin slab formats or leveraging new printing methods that allow for hyper-realistic renditions of natural materials, manufacturers continue to raise the bar for innovation in ceramics, porcelain and sanitaryware. This year will be no exception, with the country’s leading tile producers launching diverse collections that span porcelain pavers, brick and small mosaic formats.

If Coverings offered any indicator, Italian tile launches are set to make a bold statement in 2025. From vibrant colourways, such as Mediterranean blue hues, to the revival of Art Deco patterns, including chevrons and arches, and even backlit-look slabs, the next generation of Italian tiles demonstrates a flair for the dramatic. Among the trendy designs, however, there are sure to be plenty of timeless styles to suit all manner of residential, commercial and institutional spaces. Popping up everywhere from countertops to cooktops, the durable and easy-to-maintain material is also proving its merit beyond floor and wall applications.

Across the launches, sustainability remains top of mind, with Italian tile among the most eco-conscious surfacing materials on the market. The local industry is constantly evolving to implement closed-loop recycling systems, water and energy conservation practices, and meet the rigorous standards of LEED, EPD, Greenguard and Declare certifications; many manufacturers have also achieved B Corp status, reinforcing a commitment to social as well as environmental sustainability.

While Bologna may be the heart of the Italian tile industry, it is also a hub of rich cultural heritage. Defined by its historic streetscapes and iconic porticos, which are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city makes for an inspiring setting to take in the beauty of ceramic design. Not to mention, Cersaie’s annual lecture program, entitled Building, Dwelling, Thinking, is an architectural highlight in its own right: Its acclaimed international speakers have included no less than 13 Pritzker Prize winners. This year’s lineup is slated to be just as impressive, with Madrid-born architect Ángela García de Paredes and Portuguese firm CAN RAN confirmed, and more speakers yet to be announced. Situating ceramics within the global design landscape, Cersaie is an event not to be missed.
