Charlotte the consctruction robot tries to build the future on earth and beyond

As humanity looks to the stars and faces challenges at home, the way we build is due for a revolution. Establishing a Moon base is essential for advancing lunar exploration and deep space research, but traditional construction simply isn’t possible in space’s harsh environment. Meanwhile on Earth, we’re experiencing a housing crisis with slow, expensive, and carbon-heavy building methods. Enter Charlotte, a groundbreaking construction robot designed by Crest Robotics in partnership with Earthbuilt Technology, offering a new approach for both worlds.

Charlotte is the product of innovative minds combining Crest Robotics’ advanced robotics with Earthbuilt Technology’s unique extrusion and compaction systems. The result is a fully autonomous, spider-like robot that is lightweight and highly adaptable. Charlotte delivers a construction solution that is affordable, fast, and low in carbon emissions. She offers answers to both space-age challenges and real-world housing demands.

Based in Delray Beach, Florida, the digital craftsmanship behind Charlotte makes her more than just a robot. She comes equipped with a special extrusion system attached to her undercarriage. This system collects readily available materials such as sand, earth, and even waste products like crushed brick. These materials are bound in fabric and compressed into structural layers. The layers form the walls of a building using a process that is efficient, sustainable, and much less carbon-intensive compared to standard construction.

Charlotte’s creators have set an ambitious goal: for her to construct a 200 square meter home in just one day using Earthbuilt’s sustainable building system. This rapid pace could redefine how quickly and affordably homes are built, especially in areas facing urgent housing shortages.

But Charlotte’s capabilities go beyond Earth. Her lightweight frame allows her to fold up compactly for transport to the Moon or beyond. Once there, her agile and dynamic design allows her to operate on the lunar surface and quickly build structures out of local materials. This could make lunar habitats a reality far sooner than many imagined, helping to support future astronauts and explorers as they venture farther into space.

Charlotte matters for more than just her technical abilities. On Earth, she offers a way to deliver affordable, sustainable homes at unmatched speed and scale, tackling the housing crisis while keeping emissions near zero. In space, she is a vital step toward building the infrastructure needed for deeper exploration. For society, Charlotte points to a future where everyone has access to sustainable shelter and where technology helps us achieve goals that once seemed out of reach.
