Located in the heart of Sheffield, This project created a fresh, vibrant, and open workspace for the UK-based communications consultancy Counter Context.

Working with Counter Context we collaboratively reviewed and select a new location for their Sheffield Headquarters. Having undertaken an extensive engagement process with the team, we developed a workspace model to meet the needs of the organisation, and using this model analysed several potential spaces, creating test-fit layouts to help refine & inform the final selection.

After successfully selecting a new location, at Sheffield New Era, we have created a unique workspace environment that provides a well balanced mix of formal and informal workplace settings, with an aesthetic inspired by the art of communication and connectivity.

Counter Context are a specialist Communications, PR and Public affairs company whose focus is delivering calm and considered communications solutions. Unlike their previous office with individual offices – cut off meeting rooms and lack of breakout space, this new space provides the team with a dynamic, open-plan environment that reflects their values of trust, encourages communication, and removes any sense of hierarchy.

The design supports a range of work styles from agile working to board meetings, team collaboration, and focused individual work.

On entering there is no formal Reception but a combination of flooring and lighting help to establish clear zones, An open kitchen and coffee island are located adjacent the Entrance with a Lounge area opposite, providing both visitors and staff with an easy and intuitive welcome into the space.

The workspace is open plan and the meeting rooms mostly glazed to enable visibility and connection, balanced by discrete, private spaces; A separate kitchen, supports healthy meal choices and the opportunity to bring food from home with no impact to the office. Smaller meeting rooms provide privacy for 1 to 1’s, confidential phone calls and mothering. The addition of these spaces ensures the office accommodates & supports inclusively.

As an open plan workspace acoustics are key, the considered specification of lighting, partitions, planting, storage, ceiling baffles, flooring and soft seating all help with acoustic comfort. Sensory needs are considered with easily controllable air conditioning, lighting and window dressings offering users comfort and control within the space
