Family House Hlubocepy by RO_AR Szymon Rozwalka Architects

The proposed building by RO_AR Szymon Rozwalka Architects is situated at the intersection of urban and natural environments. On the north-western side of the site lies a bio-corridor that follows the Dalejský Brook and features the prominent Hlubočepské Rocks. Please read more below.

The site is bordered by urban space to the south and east, which is characterized by a disorderly and haphazard development. This can have a negative impact on the value of the land being developed. Therefore, the design and layout of the house take this context into account and respond accordingly.

The architectural design aims to incorporate the natural surroundings into both the exterior and interior of the site. However, it also intends to create a separation from the “urban world” by becoming an abstract form that corresponds to the nearby rocks in terms of scale and shape. The building’s design considers two important factors: the need for natural light to illuminate the rooms, and the challenge posed by the narrow entrance and the neighboring building on the southern boundary of the site.

Initially, the architects at RO_AR, led by Szymon Rozwalka, designed a building using land deformation techniques. The plan was to seamlessly integrate the structure into an artificial hill created on the northwestern side. On the southeastern side, the “hill” was supposed to be excavated to provide an entrance patio below the building, which was designed with a separate rectangular geometry.

In order to stay within budget constraints, the architects had to reduce the size of the building that was originally proposed. They chose a risky approach of directly cutting out certain elements that were deemed unnecessary, which impacted the final outcome significantly. However, this method produced some surprisingly positive results in certain areas.
