From Metal Box To Modern Home: Inside A 40-ft Tiny Home With A Space-Maximizing Interior

Backcountry Containers of Wisconsin has ingeniously converted a shipping container into a cozy tiny house, dubbed the Kennedy Model. This compact abode features an open and thoughtfully designed interior that optimizes the available space. Built from a high-cube shipping container, which offers extra height compared to standard containers, the Kennedy Model measures 40 feet (12.9 meters) in length. The exterior boasts a fresh coat of paint, complemented by wooden accents and multiple windows.

The home’s interior spans approximately 300 square feet (28 square meters) and is elegantly finished with white shiplap walls and durable vinyl flooring. Entry is accessed through double glass doors that lead directly into the cozy living room. Bathed in natural light, this space feels open and airy, featuring comfortable seating arrangements with a sofa, a chair, and a coffee table for entertaining guests. To ensure comfort throughout the seasons, a ceiling fan and a mini-split air-conditioning unit, as well as insulation, have been installed to counteract the natural thermal challenges of residing in what is quite literally a giant metal box!

Adjacent to the living area is the L-shaped kitchen, thoughtfully designed for both function and style. It includes a breakfast bar with seating for two. The kitchen is equipped with a farmhouse-style sink, an apartment-sized fridge/freezer, and an induction cooktop, providing all the essentials for meal preparation. There is also ample space to accommodate a few more appliances, creating a well-equipped kitchen for residents.

The bathroom is conveniently accessed from the kitchen through a sliding door, offering a compact yet functional space. Inside, you’ll find a modern shower, a composting toilet, and a sleek sink, ensuring all the necessities are included in this efficient layout. On the opposite end of the tiny house, away from the bathroom, lies the bedroom.

This cozy space is also entered via a sliding door, and it is equipped with a comfortable double bed and is designed with ample headroom, allowing residents to stand upright with ease. A spacious wardrobe is included, while additional storage can be found beneath the bed, providing practical solutions for keeping the area organized and clutter-free.

The tiny house is designed to operate off-the-grid, though using solar power, it utilizes a generator to meet its energy requirement. But a solar power upgrade would be something you could consider. The home is also equipped with water tanks. The Kennedy Model is available for purchase for US$80,000.

Unlike some tiny houses that are designed for mobility, this model is intended for stationary living, making it ideal for those seeking a permanent and compact home setup. The company says that there are several delivery options available, although we are unsure if delivery costs are included, or whether that would be an additional cost.
