With a dynamic line-up of over 50 events, the annual festival is set to shine a spotlight on design excellence, innovation, and boundless creativity across forms, mediums and concepts. From exhibitions, talks, film premieres, and immersive experiences, the celebration promises to captivate and inspire audiences from all walks of life.
“We are back with an exciting program of events that reflects the region’s clever ideas, creativity and strong desire to create a better future through design,” says the City of Greater Geelong Mayor, Trent Sullivan.
A reflection of Geelong’s rich design heritage and status as a UNESCO City of Design, the event will unite local designers, industry leaders and design enthusiasts from across Victoria in a multifaceted exploration of design and suggestions of what the future holds for the industry.
Geelong Design Week’s commitment to celebrating local talent, First Nations designs and sustainability promises unique perspectives delivered in innovative ways. This year, the festival takes pride in being a champion of creativity, celebrating the design legacy of Geelong which is woven into the fabric of daily life.
Three highlights from this year’s program include:

Where: Wurriki Nyal on the Podium Level in Multipurpose Rooms 1 & 2, 137-149 Mercer St, Geelong
Presented by Open House Melbourne and The City of Greater Geelong, this enlightening panel discussion offers a free exploration of Geelong’s architectural evolution. Delve into the design narratives behind iconic structures such as the Geelong Arts Centre, the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, and Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct. Gain insights into how these architectural wonders shape the city’s identity and contribute to the community.

Where: National Wool Museum, 26 Moorabool St, Geelong
The regional premiere screening of Modern Melbourne 2023 will include a Q&A with this year’s AIA Gold Medal recipient, Kerstin Thompson, who features in the film.
This eighth season instalment delves into the profound work of Australia’s eminent architects and designers, spotlighting their enduring influence on Melbourne’s urban landscape. Kerstin Thompson, renowned for her sensitive approach to architecture, delves into the intricate balance between design, local context, and our living heritage. Presented by Open House Melbourne in collaboration with Heritage Council Victoria, this event offers a captivating exploration of architectural innovation and its profound impact on the city.

Where: Greenhouse Interiors Showroom, 174-176 Ryrie Street, Geelong
Julia Green, one of Australia’s leading interior stylists will be giving a talk that delves into explore the intricacies of running small design businesses, alongside Lucy Glade Wright and Jessica Bettenay.
Upon arrival, enjoy a glass of sparkling wine while delving into the practicalities of local small design enterprises. This dialogue not only highlights the challenges but also the prospects that abound within this sector. With an interactive Q&A session, you’re encouraged to contribute your insights and reflections, ensuring a dynamic and informative exchange.
Drawing Greater Geelong into the spotlight
“Geelong Design Week will make space to share clever ideas, explore design thinking, stimulate creativity through talks, tours, workshops and exhibitions and allow community members to peek inside the minds of local designers,” says Deputy Mayor Aitken. “The diverse range of events on offer showcase just how creative and talented Greater Geelong is.”
