GOAL concept incorporates a bit of tech into physical play

One of the most common complaints of parents the past decade or so is that their children are continuously glued to the screen (although of course, you can also say that adults are too). You can hear a lot of grown ups say “Back in our day, we used to play with other children in the fields or in the streets”. It’s hard to bring those days back since we live in a totally different era right now. But what parents can do now is to create specific times when everyone has to put down their phones and play a game. There is also room to integrate some sort of tech into this playtime since that’s what they’re used to.

The GOAL project is a playful, well‑crafted industrial design concept aimed at encouraging healthy competition and active play in children aged 3–6. Blending smart technology with traditional ball games, it’s a heartfelt response to kids’ increasing screen time through interactive physical toys. It’s made up of two main components: a projector-equipped base unit with a built-in speaker and a smart ball with a “hidden trick”.

This concept has the potential to transform any indoor or outdoor space into an immersive, gamified play area where children and their parents or guardians can engage in active, interactive play. By simply kicking, rolling, or shaking the smart ball, players can trigger a variety of projected visuals that turn floors, walls, or open areas into dynamic game zones. The integrated projector brings the environment to life, casting colorful animations, targets, or game elements directly onto the play surface, whether it’s a living room floor or a backyard patio.

Complementing the visual experience, the built-in speaker provides real-time audio feedback, such as game progress updates, achievement notifications, and encouraging sounds that help maintain engagement and excitement. Together, these features create a fully interactive and responsive play experience that promotes movement, creativity, and connection between children and their caregivers.

The “magic” behind the ball is that the harder you kick it, the slower it travels as it detects high force and absorbs energy. When you kick it gently, the lower force is detected so it is able to travel farther. This reversal levels the physical playing field between children and adults. Kids can genuinely “win” without feeling the adult is letting them win. Well of course once the kids figure it out, it sort of levels the field again or they might also feel that the adults were still letting them win.

This GOAL concept is able to reimagine play through empathetic design: intelligent, joyful, and family-centered. Its clever mechanisms and interactive experience show how industrial design can support healthy development and foster emotional bonds. With further prototyping and real-world testing, GOAL could inspire a new generation of active, mindful toys that inspire kids, and parents, to play with purpose.
