When Karolina moved from a small studio to a newly built house, the construction ate up most of her renovation budget. That pushed her to learn how to update the look of her old furniture and furnish her new home affordably.

The DIY projects grew from a need to a part-time hobby, and now a thriving business in furniture rejuvenation and restoration.

Karolina shares one of her client projects with us – a BESTÅ makeover in boho Hamptons style. Her IKEA hack will totally transform your standard BESTÅ sideboard into a head turner.

IKEA BESTÅ sideboard hack in Hamptons style before and after

IKEA items used:

Other materials and tools:

  • Wooden top
  • Trim
  • Furniture legs
  • Moulding
  • Primer
  • Mineral acrylic paint
  • New hardware drawer pulls
  • Varnish
  • Cane webbing

How to hack the IKEA BESTÅ sideboard

1. Clean the surface of the storage units, do a light sanding with a sanding paper, undust.

2. Measure and cut the moulding for the BESTÅ doors. The challenge here was cutting the moulding into octangles. (Trigonometry to the rescue!) If you don’t have a miter saw, use a hand miter saw to get the job done. Use wood glue to apply the moulding to the door surface.

3. Apply a primer for better paint adhesion. Let the primer dry thoroughly, following instructions on the can.

4. Pick your favorite colour. I used Fusion Mineral Paint in the colour “Blue Pine” for the top coat. It’s a bluish-gray with a touch of sage and it turned out to be such a beautiful color.

5. Seal the entire dresser with acrylic lacquer. Lightly sand and smooth the lacquer between coats to achieve a flawless finish. Sand it with 400-500 grit sandpaper and remove any dust before applying the next coat.

6. Next, measure and cut a wooden countertop to fit above the IKEA BESTÅ cabinet. Secure the wood top with nails from inside the cabinet.

Add furniture legs to IKEA BESTÅ sideboard

7. Then, get the dresser on new legs. I chose heavy curved legs which I stained in the same color as the wooden countertop. As the BESTÅ is not solid wood but paper filling in some areas, I added a plywood bottom and screwed the legs to the bottom wood piece. Then I trimmed out the edges and it turned out pretty nice as it provided continuity with the wooden countertop.

8. Add new hardware. I went for a classy gold ring pull.

9. You can also add cane webbing to decorate the fronts imitating drawers. Use transparent adhesive to apply it eg. Mod Podge. I then added trim around the rattan and gold knobs to complete the faux drawer look.
