This year, IKEA’s Black Friday campaign spotlights a lesser-known department, bringing a more sustainable and purposeful approach to Black Friday.

The hidden gem? IKEA’s free assembly parts department.

The initiative is an extension of the ‘Keep good things going’ campaign launched in May 2023, which brought attention to the IKEA Buy Back Service, As-Is areas, and even featured Flea Market events outside stores in some countries.

Since the inception of the Buy Back campaign in 2020, Ingka Group, the parent company of IKEA, has successfully welcomed back over 736,000 items of furniture through its stores. The Black Friday week will also bring forth exclusive offers for IKEA Family members, emphasizing affordable deals on products and services, allowing customers to save money and energy.

Karen Pflug, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ingka Group, commented on the success of previous campaigns and sees the upcoming initiative as another chance to inspire and raise awareness about the services offered year-round.

Among these services is the Assembly Parts Department, which provides over 4,000 free assembly parts, including nuts, bolts, screws, dowels, and fittings. It’s the first place to go if you have missing IKEA parts or need a few extra for your IKEA hacking project.

Free Assembly Parts, Now Online

The Assembly Parts service, now accessible online, has been rolled out in 28 IKEA Retail countries, offering customers greater convenience compared to the previous in-store and customer service options. Last year, 1.8 million customers took advantage of this fully rolled-out online service, receiving 21.9 million spare parts.

Pflug emphasized the benefits of the Assembly Parts service, stating, “For most of IKEA’s 900 million annual customers, the service is a yet-to-be-discovered benefit.” She pointed out that the online service aims to support customers facing financial challenges, allowing them to upgrade or repair their furniture affordably.

Recent research by IKEA revealed that 89% of customers sometimes repair household products. However, this number has declined since 2021, with the primary barriers identified as the lack of knowledge and services, cost, and time. The Assembly Parts service addresses these concerns by providing a straightforward solution for customers to keep their IKEA products in good condition.

As part of its commitment to becoming a circular business, Ingka Group is exploring various solutions. This includes repurposing As-Is areas, which offer lower-priced products and feature secondhand items and information on maintaining, cleaning, or personalizing IKEA products.

Furthermore, the Buyback services continue to be available year-round in 31 countries, allowing customers to extend the life of their furniture by passing it on for a second life. IKEA’s Black Friday campaign aligns with its broader sustainability goals and commitment to creating a more circular and eco-friendly approach to retail.
