Berlin-based designer Domenic Degner layers natural materials with an earthy palette for ethical jewellery label Lilian Von Trapp’s new flagship. The designer took a warm approach to minimalism with sleek lines and organic shapes coalescing in an immersive spatial experience that feels all-encompassing.

With long sheer curtains, diffused light enters the store from its large floor-to-ceiling glass windows that look out onto Kurfürstenstraße in Berlin’s Tiergarten. Inside a 360-degree experience unfolds with high-quality materials that serve to offer an elegant and timeless effect. Domenic looked to represent the craftsmanship that goes into the production of Lillian’s jewellery within the store’s interior through a series of unique objects and organic shapes.

Warmth is introduced through lime washed painted walls and waxed concrete floors providing a base for the overlaid limestone and local oak timber materiality. French doors fit seamlessly into the room, connecting the atelier with its adjacent workshop.

The starting point for the interior was the idea of a watering hole carved from stone. With this in mind and a tight turn around, the whole project was completed within four months. Domenic, in collaboration with his partner Falko Landergerger, created all of the bespoke furniture on the fly. This included three stone modules all constructed from Deutscher Grünstein quarried in Germany; a stone hand wash basin similar to a fountain that invited guests to ‘cleanse’ and leave the outside behind, a large inviting stone table that acts as the monolithic centre of the room and a stone-shelf display staging one of a kind pieces.

These sculptural pieces are paired with an irregularly shaped mirror that’s reminiscent of a large erratic boulder, an off-white coffee table and plush sand-coloured sofas. This interplay of warm and soft, imperfect-cool and perfect-hard surfaces leans into the warm minimalist aesthetic, balancing a spatial experience akin to a hybrid atelier-living room.

Besides the joy of creating custom furniture under the newly minted DEGLAN STUDIOS with his partner Falko Landenberger, Domenic cites his favourite aspect of the project as the atmosphere. “The photos don’t do the space justice,” he says, which is really true of any good design—you have to see it to really experience it.
