A working environment with a strong identity for a global brand
At the Swiss headquarters of McDonald’s, a small-scale office landscape is being transformed into an open work environment. In a participatory process with the employees, Mint Architecture developed an identity-creating working Environment that fosters collaboration, utilises space efficiently and brings the spirit of the brand to life. A central, activity-based core provides access to the three floors and divides the space into different room typologies.

Community area: The three floors of the new working environment are divided into four zones: «Community», «Meeting», «Open Space Area» and activity-based spaces. The centrepiece is the multifunctional meeting zone, which takes up a large part of the first floor. The central meeting point is the modern canteen with a spacious coffee counter, fully equipped kitchen, and a variety of seating options. One side opens onto the terrace, while opposite is a spacious meeting room with state-of-the-art presentation technology. Thanks to mobile partition walls and curtains, this three-part zone can be flexibly connected to create a large event space. Directly adjacent is the open-space work area with open and closed meeting and focus rooms.

Workspace area: The design of the two upper office floors follows the same principle of interaction and retreat. In the centrally located access core, employees have access to meeting spaces and focus rooms as well as an integrated kitchenette parallel to the open-plan area. The open-plan workstations along the continuous window front are naturally lit thanks to the new glass façade. The arrangement of the meeting rooms and individual offices contributes to an optimal acoustic atmosphere and ensures that they are easily accessible from all sides.

The interior design of the new headquarters conveys a strong identity on all floors, which is characterised by the design and materialisation of the central core. A lively interplay of colours and textures clearly sets this area apart from the surrounding work zones: Wall panelling made of perforated corrugated sheet metal, black-framed glass doors, fixtures made of fine oak wood and acoustic elements reminiscent of restaurant design create powerful contrasts to the bright, minimalist design of the open-plan areas. The result is a working atmosphere that brings the McDonald’s brand identity to life and divides the rooms into different activity-orientated zones.
