While the kitchen stakes its claim as the social heart of the home, we also spend a full third of our lives in bed. And as places of rest and respite, our beds and bedrooms are quiet havens, with the best-designed spaces defined by a sense of calm, tranquility and balance. But that shouldn’t preclude the occasional dose of aesthetic opulence — an appetite satisfied in high style by Moooi’s Extinct Animals collection of bedding.
A collaboration with Dutch linen brand Bedding House, the series creates a striking visual focal point. It riffs on Moooi’s , a line of fabrics, wallcoverings and carpets inspired by archival drawings — sourced from museums around the world — that imagine long-lost species. Informed by a sort of inverse retrofuturism (call it retro-retroism), the collection playfully delves into a prehistory fabricated through the fanciful lens of the more recent past.
The whimsical bedding comprises eight duvet covers, as well as a bedspread, cushions and an oversize statement scarf. Made with natural materials such as silk, wool and sustainable satin cotton, and available in an abundance of colourways, the fauna-depicting designs range from the Flying Coral Fish and Calligraphy Bird to the Blooming Seadragon.
Amplified by vivid hues that stand out against the luxurious fabrics, the “extinct” animals are portrayed in a variety of settings and styles. While the bold Menagerie pattern is an eye-popping interplay of species, the subtler Umbrella Squid features elegantly understated circular motifs.
Meanwhile, the pillow is embroidered with a Dodo; the extinct bird is also represented on a more abstract and textured bedspread, where it creates a subtle focal point against a monochromatic palette.
For Moooi, Extinct Animals is a foray into the world of bedding. But while a sense of fun and experimentation underlines the collection, a rigorous design sensibility is evident throughout. Pops of colour are artfully paired with quieter finishes — and even Menagerie’s kaleidoscope of colours, plants and animals resolves into a coherent whole. Elevated by fine embroidery, cord piping and Oxford borders, it all feels every bit as sumptuous as it looks.
