Teardrop trailer campers have a thing; they are no-fuss camping setups. Easy to set up, camp, and get going – whether your choice is only an overnight halt or an extended stay in the wilderness. However, the confined real estate can seem claustrophobic, especially when you’re forced inside by rain or darkness. This compact living space with tiny windows suddenly doesn’t feel right. Thanks to some brains in South Africa, we now have an alternative that looks to light up the teardrops for camping goodness.

The solution is developed by South African RV maker Naledi Campers. It has released a namesake teardrop model which would leave you impressed with its floor-to-ceiling glass windows on either side. Get me in there and I’ll spend a few nights in the Chena Lake Recreation Area, in Fairbanks, Alaska, ice fishing by the day and watching the northern sky turn green by the night, all through the glass windows of my Naledi, laying comfortably on a mattress that does not need inflating or folding away. Picture perfect!

Back to reality, Naledi is apparently just like any other teardrop, until you see the sides where the difference is more than obvious. The entire space is filled with side windows made using 4 mm toughened glass. It opens up the interior of the camper to greater amount of natural light and panoramic views of the vista you have the trailer camped at.

Of course, these majestic windows – that are not a regular in campers of its size – are the highlights of the Naledi’s design, but its capabilities are not limited to it. The pint-sized towable is made from aluminum composite and is thoroughly insulated with high-density insulation. The nose cone is fully aluminum and so are the lockable doors, you’ll find on either side of the trailer.

It’s said, that if you have a house made of glass, you should draw the curtains before changing into PJs. This not applicable to the Naledi. It comes with two awnings, one to cover the rear cooking area and the other over the windows on the sides for privacy. If you’re still not sure, you get privacy blinds and mosquito nets on either side. The well-lit interior of the camper trailer is fashioned with a 100mm thick high-density foam mattress. It has LED lights for when the sun goes down, plenty of storage for your belongings, and power outlets to ensure your stay is not hindered by IG FOMO.

A bi-directional roof fan helps maintain the temperature indoors, while the outdoor kitchen is well-equipped with induction and gas camp stoves, a microwave, crockery storage, a mini-fridge etc al. Since the Naledi teardrop camper has all the making of an off-the-grid towable, the makers don’t disappoint. It’s packed with a 120W roof-mounted solar system and a 100Ah battery. Self-sufficiency for power is ensured, but you might just have to fend for water and sewage connectivity. The Naledi is currently selling in SA for R289,000 (roughly $16,000), but we assume state-side deliveries to begin soon.
