NXP Semiconductors is a global player in the semiconductor industry, with its headquarters and research center located at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. The organization faced an important challenge: how to accommodate a workplace for a diverse group of more than 1,100 employees including R&D, corporate, and IT teams in a way that strengthens collaboration, accelerates innovation, and optimizes space utilization.
At the same time, NXP wanted to transition from a traditional, enclosed office environment towards a modern workplace that reflects the changing way of working centered around flexibility, collaboration, technology and user experience.
Hollandse Nieuwe and Veldhoen + Company joined forces to take on this challenge. In just six months, they developed a research- and data-driven workplace vision. User group typologies, user interviews, and co-creation sessions, formed the basis of our design process. The project was completed 15 months after the start of these activities.
The new NXP headquarters covers 12,500 m² across two buildings (HTC 60 and HTC 91), representing a reduction of 5,000 m² compared to the previous footprint.
The environment is designed according to the principles of activity-based working, tailored to the three defined work typologies (research / corporate / digital). Employees can now choose where and how they work, depending on their tasks, with zones for focus, collaboration, meetings, and social interaction.
The strength of the design is especially visible in the renewed atrium. What was once a closed-off heart of the building has been transformed into an inviting meeting place where technology, people, and brand come together. With clever interventions such as a light poured floor, a visible coffee bar, an open reception area, and a colourful dichroic elevator shaft, a space has been created that welcomes, energizes, and surprises both visitors and employees. The coffee bar, the pantries on the higher floors, the showroom, and informal seating areas turn the atrium into a lively hub of the organization.
Despite the short project timeline, a sustainable design was realized. As many materials and components as possible were reused: partition walls, ceilings, and furniture were given a second life in the new environment. Where new materials were needed, circular or biobased alternatives were chosen.
This project shows how a smart workplace strategy contributes to spatial efficiency, cultural transformation, and employee satisfaction and how strong collaboration between strategy, design, and organization leads to impactful results.
