DC.AD Studio have renovated the duplex apartment RGM 46 in Lisbon, Portugal, executing clean design with impeccable attention to detail within a limited space and budget. The functional 60sqm layout was previously segmented into multiple smaller rooms across two floors. DC.AD worked to open up the interior, and separated social and private areas onto the lower and upper floor respectively.

In creating a single, expansive living room, all walls on the lower floor were removed. This necessitated a new reinforcement structure composed of steel beams and columns, which were left exposed and hence became a core feature of the project. Running lengthwise, the steel structure demarcates two distinct areas of the living room. One is south-facing, opening onto an outdoor balcony and receiving natural light from openings in the main façade, while the other is north-facing toward a windowless rear wall. A strategically positioned column assists in defining an east-facing dining area and kitchen set in a new expansion to the north of the building.

A series of panels conceals kitchen cupboards, storage, and access to stairs that lead to the upper floor. In addition to accommodating kitchen functions, the grey panels provide a single and continuous backdrop for the ground floor living space. The ceiling is painted the same shade of grey, a distinction from the bright white surfaces of the lounge area and structural wooden ceiling joists. A custom pale pink, semi-open metal shelving unit serves both kitchen and living areas, enhancing continuity between each space.

An open-plan master suite is spread across the entire upper floor, with carefully positioned furniture items used to distinguish hierarchy across the interior. A freestanding mirrored cabinet creates separation between bedroom and bathroom while still allowing free-flowing movement. The mirrored wardrobe expands the bedroom as well as reflecting greenery from an outdoor terrace. The interior explores various shades and textures of white and grey through surfaces, objects and textiles. The bed is set within a slightly recessed nook, with bedside tables of different heights adding quirky charm. A skylight provides natural light and ventilation to the bathroom. Two semi-transparent pink acrylic panels act as doors, and filter in coloured light.Click To Read Entire Post
