The annual 1 SHOT exhibition from Image Makers Association Australia (IMAA) in partnership with Stylecraft, was launched across Australia on the evening of 10th July. With simultaneous openings in Stylecraft showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, this year’s exhibition titled, Seeing & Knowing, is the largest offering to date from IMAA members, who each participate in exhibitions in their home states.

The theme for 1 SHOT 24 is Seeing & Knowing and celebrates the question of how we see and the act of seeing as a primary tool for knowing. Exploring the idea of seeing to know the world and ourselves, photographers observe, frame, reframe and eventually, share their work. Surrounded by the outstanding brands in furniture groupings from Stylecraft, the images look right at home and provide food for thought through the disparate interpretations of the theme.

Seeing what you know, or is it knowing what you see?
Bo Wong, Carnarvon Fibreglass.

While the traditional role of photography has fundamentally offered answers through an ‘objective’ truth, current image making practices are embedded with interesting and beautiful questions as the compulsion to reframe is both literal and metaphorical.

Across the five showrooms, 43 photographers, all members of IMAA are participating. The stellar lineup includes Andrew Richey, Dean Bradley, Dianna Snape, Dylan James, Elizabeth Schiavello, Emma Cross, Garth Oriander, George Apostolidis, John Gollings, Lucas Allen, Lynton Crabb, Martina Gemmola, Michelle Williams, Nick Carlino, Shannon McGrath and Marcus Piper, Tess Kelly, Derek Swalwell, Sharyn Carins and Tom Blachford exhibiting in Melbourne; Richard Glover, Ryan Linnegar, Sian Fay Kerr, Toby Peet, Tom Ferguson, Ben Guthrie, Evan MacLean, Guy Wilkinson, Katherine Lu and Owen Rodgers presenting in Sydney; Catherine Schusler, Cieran Murphy, David Chatfield, Louise Roche and Toby Scott in Brisbane; Anthony Basheer, Kate Bowman, Sam Noonan, Caroline Cameron in Adelaide; with Aaron Brown, Bo Wong, Robert Frith, Jayne MacDonald and Carlia Knowles contributing in Perth.

IMAA is a not-for-profit association formed in mid-2022 to represent, support, celebrate and promote the work of Australian professional and emerging photographers through education and connection.

As the third iteration of 1 SHOT held in Stylecraft showrooms, 1 SHOT 24 is the most ambitious and largest to date. The exhibition is organised by a volunteer committee comprising Emma Cross, Elizabeth Schiavello, Bo Wong, Kate Bowman, Toby Scott, Anne Stroud and Guy Wilkinson and they have achieved an outstanding result with this showcase of members’ work.

This is an extraordinary exhibition that is not to be missed. With such a gathering of talent from IMAA presented in the ideal surrounds of Stylecraft showrooms, this is the exhibition to view art and furniture in a curated environment while exploring a theme that is close to our hearts. What we see and what we know are sometimes difficult to verbalise, however, images can present more tangible truths. As everyone is different, so too are the images on display, and they provide not only food for thought but are a celebration of the visual through the lens and perspective of the many talented photographers that reside in Australia.
