When it comes to side tables, most people go for functionality rather than just the design or aesthetics. I for one just look for one that can fit beside my bed or my couch and which can hold a lot of things without toppling over or collapsing. But sometimes it would be cool to have something that’s also a conversation piece or a sculpture-like table that can add to my space’s aesthetics. like this new creation of designer Peter Donders. Well, if you’re scared of holes or uneven surfaces, you better look away.

The Spherene side table embodies a refreshing approach to furniture design, focusing on essential forms and innovative use of materials. It is immediately striking for its minimalist silhouette. It’s comprised of two fundamental shapes: a perfect sphere forming the base and a thin circular disc serving as the tabletop. This reduction to geometric basics allows the inherent beauty of the materials and the precision of the construction to take center stage.

What truly sets the Spherene apart is its namesake material. The base is crafted from expanded polypropylene (EPP), a material commonly found in automotive applications due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and energy absorption properties. Donders cleverly repurposes this industrial material, highlighting its unique textured surface and inherent durability. The choice of EPP not only lends a contemporary and slightly unexpected aesthetic but also makes the table remarkably lightweight, allowing for easy repositioning within a space. The tabletop, in contrast, provides a sleek and refined surface. Available in various options, including powder-coated aluminum and potentially other materials, it offers a visually contrasting element to the textured base. The thin profile of the tabletop further emphasizes the lightness of the overall design, creating a sense of balance and visual harmony.

Donders’ design philosophy often revolves around exploring the potential of materials and simplifying forms. The Spherene table perfectly encapsulates this approach. It’s a piece that is both functional and sculptural, seamlessly integrating into a variety of interior styles. Whether used as a bedside table, a living room accent piece, or even in a more unconventional setting, the Spherene’s understated elegance and unique material composition make it a conversation starter. The Spherene Side Table is more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a testament to thoughtful design that challenges conventional material applications. Peter Donders has successfully transformed an industrial component into a sophisticated and desirable object, proving that innovation can be found in the most unexpected places. This table is a celebration of simplicity, functionality, and the inherent beauty of well-chosen materials.
