you know how i love a good beach shack, so when kim connor sent me these exquisite pics of her beach shack project, i was most excited to share with you. kim is an interiors-loving-architect, wife, mum of two boys and two black mini schnauzers and has just finished her first beach house, a small ‘original’ 1974 shack on the Sunshine Coast, in Australia. she and her husband discovered this gem of an area called Point Arkwright, and like their beach shack, Point Arkwright is like stepping back in time. It’s a spot that locals like to keep secret and is absolutely breathtaking. Think rock pools, loggerhead turtles (they nest on this beach), reefs, osprey, blue crabs, dolphins, and whales — an exceptional coastal pocket.

The original owner had owned the property for 40+ years with her family before selling it and today ‘BARRA’ as the beach shack is called (short for Barramundi — an Australia Sea Bass and kim’s all-time favorite local fish) is a larger renovated beach house made up of two distinct parts — the original 1974 Shack to the front and a single-story extension or the ‘Shed’ that kim designed and sits out the back overlooking the pool, palms, and lawn.

while kim loves architecture, she finds the most rewarding part of her work is infusing a space with objects that she loves and she sources amazing things from all sorts of places — sometimes found online (like the straw lampshades from Morocco) and a 30-year-old shark jaw found via Gumtree, which is an online marketplace like our Craigslist, and sometimes finds the very best objects from charity shops — like glassware, vintage wood bowls and platters.  as you can see, she’s a master at styling her collections and she also paints — the large canvases in the entry, master bedroom and children’s tv room are her works of art. The ground floor living room with the exposed ceiling and fireplace is one of her favorite places in the home because you can hear the roaring ocean — and was formerly the garage and the upstairs open plan loft with timber kayak hanging from the wood beams. have a look around this enviable project and for more beach shack inspiration, visit kim’s instagram account.
