Hot water is essential for your daily routine. You may get up and take a shower or just have a wash. Whichever you do, it is likely that it is in hot water. In most cases, the hot water is simply there. This makes it more of a shock when the water heater develops a fault and leaves you with lukewarm or cold water.

The good news is that, in most cases, the issue is relatively easy to fix. You simply need to call the local  hot water system experts. There are four common issues that you should be aware of:

Temperature Is Wrong

You expect and get used to your water being at a certain temperature. That means you know when the hot water heater isn’t working properly and is giving you water that is cold or not hot enough.

Coldwater is generally an issue with the power supply which is easy to check. It can also be caused by the thermostat playing up or the heating element going wrong.

However, if the water is warm then the heater is getting power, this reduces the issues to a thermostat or a heater element issue.

In rare cases, the water is too hot then the thermostat s either too high or broken.

Leaks

This is potentially the most common issue with your water heater. Water heaters contain water and metal, combined with air they are the perfect ingredients for corrosion. As corrosion occurs around the joints you are likely to end up with a small leak.

There are many reasons why your system may leak and many places where it can start. But, if you see a leak it is advisable to contact the professional as soon as possible. A small leak can quickly develop into something more.

Unusual Noises

This is one of the most obvious signs that there is something wrong with your water heater. In most cases, the water heater simply works and may make a very quiet hum in the background. However, if it starts whining, rattling, or making any other strange noise you will need to get the professionals to take a look.

This can be a result of sediment which needs the tank to be flushed. But, it can also be caused by more serious issues inside your tank and pipes. A professional will be able to identify the root of the problem and help you resolve it.

Discoloured Water

If you turn on your tap and the water comes out brown you are not going to want to drink or shower in it!

The first thing to do is check your neighbours. If they have a similar issue then the problem is probably related to the water board and they will rectify it as soon as possible.

However, if it is just your house then the inside of your tank is probably corroded. You’ll need to replace the anode rod to stop the corrosion from getting worse. This attracts corrosion instead of the tank. But, it is a clear sign that your tank is on its last legs.
