There’s nothing more exciting than packing your backpack before you head off on a grand adventure. Whether it’s a small trip to visit loved ones, or a long awaited overseas experience, the anticipation and excitement can be really thrilling. If you’re traveling by backpack only, then chances are you don’t have a ton of space to play around with. This makes it even more important that you’re taking the essentials. So I’m going to help you with a bit of a packing list of my top things to take in your backpack when traveling, no matter the location or length of the trip. Keep reading to learn more!

1. Some Stylish Sneakers
I’m so glad that sneakers are on trend at the moment, especially beautiful crisp white sneakers. For men and women they work really well and you can dress up or down your outfit to have the sneakers work for you for almost any occasion. I personally use sneakers to dress down more evening style outfits so that I can wear them in the day and get a lot more wear out of my clothes when traveling. Sustainable sneakers, tennis shoes, platforms, and boots tend to be great ways to make an otherwise fancy look seem relaxed for daytime plans.

2. At Least One Dressy Outfit
Even if you’re backpacking in a third world country, there might be opportunities that pop up that you couldn’t foresee. You might be invited to a stranger’s wedding! Or you might be in the middle of Europe and realize there’s a wonderful opera that you’d hate to miss. Perhaps you just stumble upon a high end restaurant that you’re dying to try, but it has a strict dress code. Maybe you find yourself on Tinder swiping right and want to go on a date, but you have nothing nice to wear and the clothing sizes are all too small locally. For that reason I always suggest taking at least one dressy outfit no matter where you’re going, you just never know when you’ll want it.

3. A Plug Convertor With Surge Protection
If you’re taking any electronics, and I’m sure you’ll be at least taking a smartphone, traveling with a surge protector is absolutely essential. Yes, it’s probably something you can pick up while overseas, but do you really want to spend some of your trip hunting for a good quality surge protector to keep your electronics safe? I’m guessing you don’t… While I was in Myanmar traveling, a friend and I were charging our laptops. I had a surge protector, she didn’t, and with the continuous power outages her laptop’s charging cable got fried. Thankfully the laptop was fine, but it was a very expensive mistake!
4. A Rain Jacket
As the Germans like to say, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. No matter where in the world you’re going, there’s always a chance of rain. I’m always so optimistic about trips that I tend to forget to pack a rain jacket, but having a good quality rain jacket if things turn sour can make you so much more comfortable! On that note, don’t forget to buy a rain cover for your backpack too, so you can keep your belongings safe and ensure that no matter the weather you can keep your travel adventure going.

I hope these tips help you feel inspired to pack for your next adventure away! Happy travels.
