this week’s wear this there lands us in new york city, and we’re headed to a spot i’ve always wanted to dine — frenchette. i’m headed to paris in a couple of weeks (finally!) so i must have brasseries on my mind because this is one of new york’s most relaxed, warm, and definitely charming. and delicious, too — it has the prestigious honor of being the 2019 James Beard Foundation Winner of Best New Restaurant. oooh la la! it’s a touch sophisticated here, so we’re going to get a little dressed up in our black & white feminine best, but not ‘too’ — it is summer in new york city so comfort is a must. we’re slipping on a cropped but elegant black top with a tiered white skirt, great-looking black slingback sandals and a tres chic lorna murray hat. add a black bandana and beaded choker at the neck, and some big, huge sunglasses, and a red lip, and we’re looking completely pulled together! to get you in a new york mood i suggest reading Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. Written with anderson cooper’s unique insider’s viewpoint (he’s gloria Vanderbilt’s son, afterall), this is a quintessentially new york story of success, and as remarkable as the family it so vividly captures. Moving from the rough and tumble wharves of old Manhattan to the lavish drawing rooms of Gilded Age Fifth Avenue to modern-day New York, they wryly recount the triumphs and tragedies of an American dynasty unlike any other.
