we’re off to new york city today to dine at a 19-year-old wunderkind chef Flynn McGarry’s very first restaurant gem in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. flynn has been cooking since a very young age and has loads of experience with pop-up restaurants and has trained in many a fine dining establishment, but now he’s the chef of the extremely popular gem, with menu changes three times a year pertaining to the season, showcasing vegetarian fare from local farms in the tri-state area. he serves up an 8-10 course menu at a fixed price, and gastronomies are lining up to get a table. the restaurant has a very homey, Scandinavian vibe — it feels a bit like you’ve been invited to a friend’s cool new york pad rather than a restaurant. so we’re going casual and comfy but with a distinctly feminine feel. i’ve paired a flouncy black blouse with a tiered maxi skirt and fabulous mary janes in gold along with a vintage-inspired clutch. add to that a chic black crocheted headband, some pearly earrings, and a necklace, and we’re good to go. Before heading out into the sophisticated new york night, i suggest reading The Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir to bring you down to earth. in her most famous novel does not flinch in her look at Parisian intellectual society at the end of the Second World War. Drawing on those who surrounded her — authors like Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Arthur Koestler, and her passionate love affair with writer Nelson Algren, she dissects the emotional and philosophical currents of her time and the emotional odyssey of a woman torn between her inner desire and her public life.
