you may have noticed i’ve got quite the hankering to visit spain again, and this time to a few places i’ve yet to conquer — mallorca for one, and madrid for another. so today we’re dining at the very charming ultramarinos pirulo, a new concept of the traditional tavern, and a tribute to the old school grocery stores of the capital city. it’s a cozy dining space to feel right at home and enjoy some of spain’s traditional gastronomy, including lots of fresh seafood, tinned fish, and spanish wines, as well as a carefully curated selection of gourmet grocery products — all for sale.

we’re going to blend in, but not too much, in a casual, layered ensemble perfect for brunch. i’m dressing you in the very on-trend oversized red striped button-down open over a slim white tank top, worn with my favorite cropped jeans, a fringed belt, and flat red sandals — ideal for walking the ancient streets of madrid. i’ve added a sweet sun hat, oversized sunnies, and an adorable straw tote bag, and at the neck, i’ve got a great toile print bandana and layered necklaces. before heading out, i recommend reading the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafón. it takes place in barcelona in 1945 — a city slowly healing in the aftermath of the spanish civil war, where an antiquarian book dealer’s son finds solace in a mysterious book and enters into the city’s darkest secrets — an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.
