From Asymmetry to Atmosphere: Reimagining an Industrial Loft-Style Office with a Lived-In Warmth
Why would an engineering company choose a design studio celebrated for its homes to shape their first office in Bengaluru? For Vinithra Amarnathan of Weespaces, the reason was simple: to subtly redefine what a workplace could and should feel like. In reimagining the language of a modern workspace, Amarnathan has created an environment that is both design-led and highly functional, expressive yet efficient.

The studio’s hallmark warmth, tactility, and attention to lived-in detail became the foundation for this 3,000-square-foot office, envisioned as a contemporary industrial loft. Awash in natural light and surrounded by greenery, the site offered the perfect starting point. Glass partitions preserve views of the outdoors, softening the industrial character and fostering a sense of openness.

Though the asymmetrical layout could have posed challenges, the design embraces its irregularities by tucking private cabins along the edges and leaving the central spine open for circulation and workstations. A large conference room anchors the far end, framing a view of the landscape and introducing a visual axis that lends order to the non-linear plan. While the spatial logic remains pragmatic, Amarnathan weaves in emotion through a deliberate visual narrative. Carefully designed sightlines reveal distinct pockets of experience: a tone-on-tone window nook serving as an informal meeting spot, a directors’ cabin cocooned in warm wood and vibrant red, and a moody blue-and-grey conference room that seems to slow time.

The expansive, box-like volume featured exposed columns and low beams, which Amarnathan chose to accentuate rather than conceal. Material choices echo the firm’s engineering roots, interpreted through a design lens that balances functionality with creativity. Columns are clad in red brick, beams in exposed concrete, offering an honest expression of structure and craft. Layered over this earthy foundation, colour adds personality. Warm timber, deep indigo cabinetry, and coral accents drawn from the company’s own branding tie the various zones together, creating a unified visual language that bridges industrial authenticity with residential warmth.

The resulting workspace doesn’t imitate residential design but channels its spirit. This interplay between muted and expressive, rugged and refined defines the Bengaluru office, demonstrating that with thoughtful intent, even the most functional environments can evoke a sense of belonging.
