What Is Phishing?

As a business, you have to be aware of all scams and hacker tricks to know what to look for – and what to avoid. Phishing is a type of digital communication that is designed purely to be malicious. It’s a deceptive tactic to trick, to scam and to ultimately ruin a person or a business as a result.

The whole goal of a cybercriminal is to steal information and defraud others, and when this is done in a way that deceives and fools a person or a business, it can be devastating. The worst thing about it is that so many people are fooled by phishing scams today because they are just so convincing! Text message and email are the two most common delivery methods for a phishing scam, and because they are often branded with a bank or another business, they look very convincing and many people fall victim to them as a result.

How Phishing Works

There is no smart trickery here – it’s all about trusting that the victim will click a link or open an email that has been written to lure them to the click. A phishing scammer will consider the victim – be it an individual or a business – and they will craft their email or text scam based on who they are targeting.

Once victims have been chosen, a lure is created. It will only work if there is a lure for a victim to hook onto. Usually, the scammer chooses to masquerade as the victim’s bank or employer. They can even masquerade as the IRS! Social Security emails have been known to be one of the most common phishing emails in circulation. The scammer uses fear and threats to attack the victim and make them feel that if they don’t follow the link to click, something bad will happen.

How to Avoid Phishing Scams

We like to live in a world where we trust everyone, but it’s not always the right way to live. We all must be aware of phishing scams, whether an individual or a business. You can use courses in IT safety in St. Louis to educate your employees and keep them aware of phishing scams, but there are other ways that you can avoid them, including:

  • Never open an email link from a person or business you do not recognize without first calling said person to confirm.
  • Never click on an embedded link.
  • Attachments you are not expecting should be ignored.
  • Use antivirus and antimalware on your IT systems.
  • Use more than one layer of password protection on all accounts.
  • Train your staff in IT safety in St. Louis.

Phishing scams don’t tend to go away. Instead, they tend to evolve over time. With the right vigilance and training, we can ensure that phishing scams are lessened over time. Continue to ensure that you are doing all that you can to avoid scams in your workplace and hire the best IT support services to manage your security.
