Off-campus living has a lot of advantages. You have more freedom, can make your own rules, and don’t have to live by anyone else’s standards but your own. However, there are also a few things you need to be aware of before making the move.

Here is a list of what to bring vs what not to bring when moving to off-campus housing.

What to Bring

Although bringing all of your belongings seems like a good idea, it’s not always practical. When moving to off-campus housing, you should only bring the essentials. This includes items such as:

Furniture

If you plan on having friends over or want to make your new place feel like home, you’ll need to bring some furniture. Sofas, chairs, coffee tables, and end tables are all essential pieces of furniture for any living room.

In the bedroom, you’ll need a bed, of course, as well as a dresser for your clothes. A nightstand is also a good idea so you can keep your alarm clock and other items within reach.

Kitchen Essentials

You’ll need to bring some kitchen essentials with you when you move off-campus. Dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and cooking utensils are all must-haves. If you plan on doing any kind of cooking, you’ll also need to bring a few small appliances, such as a toaster oven, blender, or coffee maker.

Cleaning Supplies

Keep your new place clean by bringing along some cleaning supplies. A vacuum, mop, broom, dustpan, and cleaning supplies will help you keep the floors and surfaces clean. Toilet cleaner, shower cleaner, and all-purpose cleaner will also come in handy.

What Not to Bring

Here is a list of things you should leave behind when moving to off-campus housing:

Expensive Items

Off-campus living isn’t always the safest option, so it’s best to leave any expensive items at home. Jewelry, electronics, and other valuables should be left behind to avoid the risk of them being stolen.

Illegal Items

Of course, you also shouldn’t bring anything illegal with you when you move off-campus. This includes drugs, weapons, and anything else that could get you into trouble with the law.

Perishable Food

It’s best to avoid bringing perishable food with you when you move off-campus. If your new place doesn’t have a fridge or stove, you won’t be able to keep any food from going bad. Non-perishable food items are a better option.

Alcohol

If you’re not of legal drinking age, don’t bring alcohol with you when you move off-campus. Even if you are of legal drinking age, it’s best to keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum. Too much alcohol can lead to bad decision-making and other problems.

Off-Campus Packing

Now that you know what to bring vs what not to bring when moving to off-campus housing, you can start packing for your move. Be sure to pack essential items like furniture, dishes, and silverware, but leave behind anything illegal or expensive. With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready for your move in no time.
