exploring inspiration

In a world where everything is at your fingertips it is so important for me and my creative process to seek out inspiration in my life. In fact, it is the number one way that it keeps my work authentic to my life the things that I see on a daily basis.

Living at the beach I am so close to nature and all that it offers. This winter we’ve had a lot of kelp and seaweed washing up on our beaches and I just can’t get enough of it! I love the colors, the shapes, pattern and movement of all the weird and wild kelp. When I’m at the beach I’m always taking photographs or videos of things that catch my eye so I can use those images as reference when I am back in my studio.

While I don’t always know what I will do with my photos and inspiration, I often spend days and weeks exploring my ideas in a variety of different ways. Often I challenge myself to come up with a few different versions- sometimes it’s a pattern or drawing, other times it’s a painting. I find when I utilize that inspiration and simply play, I am bursting with ideas and I am able to come up with new ways to utilize different images, shapes, textures and motives for future projects.

Today I thought it might be fun to share a little peek into that process- finding all that inspiration and then channeling that inspiration in my creative process!
