It is clear that the knows a thing or two about exquisite taste — a fact confirmed by its being awarded its first Michelin star in 2021. Looking to site its refined menu in a space to match, ÄNG re-opened its doors in a new glass house, collaboratively designed by Norm Architects, Karimoku and Keiji Ashizawa.
Nestled into the ASTAD vineyard, the building allows scenic views to define the dining experience that takes place within it. The pristine glass exterior creates a warm atmosphere as natural light floods the restaurant’s lounge and dining area throughout the day.
Inspired by the Swedish landscape, the Japanese lifestyle brand partnered with and to create a custom interior. Together, the three design heavy-hitters explore and synthesize the tenets of Scandinavian and Japanese design for the restaurant.
Divided into two areas, the building’s ground floor boasts high ceilings and a serene bar and lounge area. From there, guests are guided down to the basement, where they are taken through the 19-course tasting menu. The interplay of vernacular and contemporary aesthetics is present throughout the entire design, including the subterranean wine cellar, dining area and wine lounge.
The stone flooring by Kronos is made multi-purpose, stretching across the countertops and up interior walls and following guests outside to the patio and garden, in which ÄNG grows its own produce. The tranquil space is complemented by slate grey canvas wall panelling and high-quality wooden flooring by Dinesen.
As a winner of Michelin Guide’s Green Star for extraordinary sustainability practices in the kitchen, using natural materials throughout the space was very important to the owners of ÄNG. met this call by selecting a material palette that elevates inspiration from the rural site.
Karimoku, Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa worked with one another to create the Karimoku furniture collection, designed specifically for ÄNG. Featuring the NCC-01, a fully upholstered club chair, and the sculptural yet laid-back A-S01 two-seater, the entire collection is made from Japanese oak and merges the design sensibilities of each of the collaborators.
Set to be available to the public in the fall, the Karimoku collection creates a serene ambiance inside the lush glasshouse. The bespoke design invites the tranquillity of the surrounding vineyard inside. The material richness created by the designers has resulted in a soothing atmosphere and, most importantly, a sensational hospitality experience.
