Sterling Global stand poised to make a permanent change to Melbourne’s social structure in a bid to revitalise the historic west end of Collins Street. The $420m, 42-level mixed-use development designed by Carr is situated opposite Southern Cross Station and flanked by iconic heritage-listed buildings: notably, the former State Savings Bank and the Batman’s Hill on Collins Hotel. As such, the new offering seeks to introduce a unique architectural syntax into its context – by meaningfully engaging with its surroundings and history and transposing these identities into a contemporary perspective.

“Introducing a new architectural language to the area, the design for 623 Collins Street aims to revive the historic site with a contemporary yet considered response,” says Chris McCue, Managing Director of Carr.

623 Collins Street thrums with a unique design rhythm cultivated through recurring square motifs and strong vertical dialogue. A 42-level tower and podium structure positioned at the corner of Collins and Spencer Streets, the development is intended to serve multiple functions including a hotel, restaurant, commercial spaces, and residential apartments. Featuring two towers with a striking glass-bladed facade and separate entrances for different purposes – such as residents or commercial users – as well as vibrant amenities such as a rooftop bar, every aspect of the project is designed with Melbourne’s public at the forefront.

Comprising 175 one-, two-, and three-bedroom residences, along with eight sub-penthouses and penthouses, the residential component of this project promises luxury living at its finest. Above these residences, a 229-room hotel and 2735 square metres of commercial space complete the multifaceted development. In a move to enhance privacy and comfort, the design incorporates sunshade screening to control light and views from the interior.

At its heart, the development aims to enhance the public’s connection and enjoyment with Melbourne’s west end by creating a welcoming communal space which encourages pedestrian engagement and exploration. This meticulous attention to detail in the creation of the facade breathes new life into the streetscape, offering passers-by a visually intriguing architectural narrative which blends history and advancement into one.

Development director of Sterling Global, Brandon Yeoh, says, “623 Collins Street will complete the revitalisation of the western CBD end of Collins Street with a high-quality mixed-use development that is in line with CBD’s shift towards becoming a multi-use destination at the heart of transport networks with access to a wide range of amenities, as well as cultural, sporting and education institutions.”

As urban renewal becomes a central focus for city futures, 623 Collins Street is set to become a landmark destination amongst Melbourne’s vibrant cityscape.
