Meier refers to the principles of Classic Modernism, a style which experienced its heyday in the era that also shaped the works of artist duo Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Beneath the railway tracks, there is a 40-metre-long corridor, leading from the entrance to the museum building. Another tunnel goes 35 metres deep into the mountain, reminiscence of the mining industry in the region. The end of the tunnel leads back into the white of the new architecture and opens up to reveal the lifts and the journey goes 270 metres high. Quite impressing concept and building.
“My open and transparent architecture creates flowing transitions between interior and exterior and reflects the same link with nature as that which is expressed in the works of Hans Arp.” Richard Meier
