Considerations When Buying A Bathtub For A Small Bathroom

Woman in White Ceramic Bathtub

One of the best things about a small bathtub is that it will be cheaper, not only to buy, but as you won’t be adding as much hot water, it will keep costs down. In addition, you will have design flexibility with all the different shapes and sizes. Most bathtub manufacturers offer several different types of shapes; some are better suited for smaller bathrooms than others. You can add bath trays that will suit your style for added relaxation. For example, a round or oval-shaped tub will take up less floor space than a rectangular one, giving you more room to stand in front of it and enjoy a relaxing soak after a long day at work. We have some top tips for getting your small bathtub just right!

Bathroom Layout

If you are working to a smaller footprint, you have to get creative! Make the most out of corner spaces. A corner-placed pedestal sink is popular in a small space because it allows you to place the toilet and tub opposite each other, maximizing floor space. If space is at a premium, this is where a small tub comes into its own, you may not want to give up a tub, but you don’t want the space to feel cramped. There are lots of ways you can design your bathroom to ensure you can keep it all! Corner tubs are an excellent way to free up space and make the most out of corners with storage options too. A freestanding bathtub may look beautiful, but it may not be practical if you don’t have the room.

Bathtub Material

When it comes to bathtubs, you have a few options in terms of materials:

Fiberglass – A tub made from fiberglass is lightweight and easy to maintain but can be easy to scratch.

Acrylic – An acrylic tub is lighter than all of its alternatives and certainly a more affordable option, but it can warp over time.

Cast iron –  Extremely durable but expensive and heavier, making it a bit more challenging to install.

Bathtub weight

A standard bathtub will hold up to 800 lbs once filled. Depending on the material, your tub will weigh more. If you want to keep the weight down, consider materials like acrylic or fiberglass. You may need to consider reinforcing your floor if you want to go with something heavier.

Bathtub types

You’ll want to take into account how much space you have available. Most bathtub manufacturers offer several different types of bathtub shapes; some are better suited for smaller bathrooms than others.

Bathtubs usually fall into the following types:

  • Freestanding tub
  • Drop in tub
  • Alcove tub
  • Corner bath
  • Walk in bath

For example, a round or oval-shaped tub will take up less floor space than a rectangular one, giving you more room to stand in front of it and enjoy a relaxing soak after a long day at work.

If you are saving space, you can go for smaller tubs with a soaking depth of around 15 to 17 inches. A soaking tub is usually about 22 inches deep. The deeper the bath, the better, in my opinion.

Bathtub sizes

Bathtubs range in size between 45 inches and 72 inches long. You will likely want to go for a bathtub that is either 45 inches to 60 inches max in a small space. You don’t have to sacrifice your luxury shower system, either. You can get most of the right bathtubs for you in various sizes, meaning you can get one to suit any style.

FAQs For Small Bathtubs

What is the smallest size for a bathtub?

If you have a small space, then you should go for a small bathtub. The smallest bathtub, which will be a drop-in tub, starts at 45 inches, making it a perfect solution for your bathroom.

How to save space in a small bathroom?

There are many ways to create the illusion of more space in your bathroom. We have listed a few to help you:

Over shower bath – Instead of having a separate shower cubicle, opt for a shower and bath tap mixer. This will allow ample space for all the rest of your bathroom furniture.

Decorate in light and bright colors – When trying to create a feeling of spaciousness, light colors on walls and ceilings can really help

Opt for wall-hung furniture – More floor space equals a feeling of a more spacious room, so opt for wall-hung furniture to help with that

Use mirrors – Mirrors reflect the light in your room, making it feel brighter and bigger

What is the shelf life of a bathtub?

On average, bathtubs should last between 10 and 15 years. But, of course, this will very much depend on the material of the tub.

Do I need a particular bathroom floor for a cast iron tub?

If you opt for the classic style of an iron tub, then you may need to consider if your bathroom floor can take the weight. When installing the tub, you should inspect the floor joists for any water damage and replace any old and worn ones. Installation for this type of bathtub is best done by a professional. If your bathroom is on a ground floor and you have concrete laid, you won’t need to do much.

What are the best small bathtubs, regardless of layout?

An alcove bathtub is probably the most commonly used bathtub. It fits snuggly against three walls maximizing the floor space available. In addition, you can get an alcove tub that is just 54 inches in length, making them brilliant if you have limited space.

How should I measure for a bathtub?

We recommend taking the following measurements:

  • The length of the space
  • From the back wall to where you want the bath to come out to
  • Depth to overflow drain

How can to install a tub myself?

If you are considering fitting your new tub yourself, it may seem like a daunting prospect. But so long as you do the necessary prep, it is possible. However, you will probably need at least two people. So we have put together a simple guide to help:

Prep – Check any plumbing regulations in your area, as even if you complete installation yourself, you may need a professional to sign off your work

Attach any fittings and feet – Place a rug or soft surface on the ground and turn the bath upside down. Adjust the feet to ensure it is level. Attach the waste and overflow fittings.

Measuring – Place the tub into its location and use a spirit level, so it is even. Adjust the feet if it is not and then check with a level again. Mark the wall where you will secure it, then do the same where you will connect it to the floor. Measure timber battens that will support the tub’s position.

Securing the timber – Align the timber with the marks you made and ensure it is level. Screw the wood in with the correct fittings.

Secure the bathtub – Check it is level and then secure it to the timber. Make sure you use the correct screws and fittings. Connect the waste pipe, overflow and taps. Turn on the water and check for any leaks.

Seal – Seal around the edges with silicone and leave to dry for at least 6 hours with the tub full of water.
