Situated in the serene expanse of Xiapu, Ningde City, Fujian Province—where the East China Sea meets the rugged coastline—a remarkable architectural project has taken shape. The Blue Insight Cave Space, part of the Ningde “Zero Carbon Island” initiative, is an innovative endeavor that reimagines public spaces. Designed by 3andwich Design in collaboration with Hewei Studio, this immersive underground structure transforms a simple viewing platform into an area that deeply connects with both the land and the sea.
The core principles of the Blue Insight Cave Space—“precipitousness, concealment, and integration”—inform its design, allowing it to almost disappear into the natural environment. Inspired by the sea caves and coastal reefs characteristic of the region, the architects created a design that harmoniously blends with the surrounding landscape.

The design subtly embeds the project beneath the surface, keeping it concealed from the expansive ocean views. Strategically oriented to face the sea without overpowering it, the building remains nearly invisible, seamlessly merging with the landscape to minimize its environmental footprint. A key feature of the Blue Insight Cave Space is its organic, underground design.
By embedding the building into the earth, the architects have crafted a space that is nearly invisible from above. This strategy honors the natural surroundings and also boosts sustainability by utilizing the earth’s natural insulation to maintain a consistent interior temperature. The reliance on energy-intensive cooling systems is also reduced.
The entrance to the Blue Insight Cave Space is a unique semi-circular passage that subtly emerges from the ground on the western side of the roof. As visitors enter, they descend into a series of interconnected “cave” rooms, each providing a unique perspective of the landscape and offering varied spaces for different activities. Similar to the natural sea caves that served as inspiration, the building showcases an exaggerated sense of scale and intimacy, turning the journey through the space into an experience that enhances the visitor’s connection to the environment.
The Blue Insight Cave Space functions as a vibrant venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and gatherings, providing both locals and tourists with an inviting place to engage with art, culture, and the picturesque surrounding landscape. Its unique design and immersive atmosphere establish it as a distinctive cultural hub, where creativity and natural beauty converge.
