Nestled in the heart of Costa Nova, Portugal, lies a house unlike any other. Designed by the visionary architects at Espaço Objecto, this unique residence isn’t your typical beach bum bungalow. It’s a captivating blend of old and new, a testament to the power of rehabilitation and thoughtful design.

While the surrounding area boasts the iconic wooden “barns” of Costa Nova, this house stands out with its distinctive charm. Its facade is a symphony of colors, thanks to the meticulously restored tiles. Look closer, and you’ll spot intricate cutouts adorning the roofline, remnants of the building’s rich history.

Step inside, and the magic continues. This isn’t just a single-family home; it’s an experience. The architects cleverly navigated the plot, weaving together the existing structure with a modern expansion. The result? A haven that embraces both intimacy and openness.

Imagine a central patio bathed in sunlight, a vertical garden adding a touch of life, and a refreshing swimming pool beckoning on a hot summer day. But wait, there’s more! A stunning ceramic panel by sculptor António Nobre graces the south wall, adding a vibrant dash of artistic expression.

The genius of the design lies in its thoughtful connection between the old and new. Since the house borders two public streets, the architects ingeniously created pathways that seamlessly bridge the pre-existing structure with the modern addition. This reflects the local tradition of using small buildings within plots for extra space, often rented out during peak season.

The new volume facing Avenida da Bela Vista pays homage to the traditional Costa Nova aesthetic. Its gable roof and wood cladding subtly echo the familiar “barn” style, creating a sense of belonging within the neighborhood.

Espaço Objecto’s Costa Nova house is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a story whispered by history, reimagined for the modern age. It’s a testament to the power of respecting the past while embracing innovation. It’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, a testament to the enduring beauty of thoughtful design.
