Diy: Feather Arrow Necklace Tutorial

When I saw this gorgeous

bluejay arrow necklace from

Digby and Iona , I knew I needed it. At $150, the necklace is a bit out of my budget, so I decided to go for a DIY inspired by Digby and Iona’s necklace. I already had a bluejay feather that my mom found in the woods while walking the dog a little while ago, so I just needed a few basic other supplies. My version is far from being as pretty as the original, and I don’t know how long it will last, but I had fun making it!If you’d like to try it, you will need:

– a chain necklace + a jumpring
– a small twig (mine is about 2 3/4″ (7cm) long)
– a little piece of air drying clay
– strong glue
– a feather (I’m using a bluejay feather)
– an awl, or a strong needle
– scissors
– an X-acto knife, or a sharp knife
– silver (or chrome) spray paint (not pictured)

Please note: This project is relatively simple to complete, but it does require the use of sharp tools , so it is not suitable for children

1. Using an awl or a strong needle, carefully make a hole in the twig, at about 2/3 of the length of the twig

2. Spread open the jump ring and pass one end through the hole you just made in the twig, then pinch the jump ring closed.

3. Cut two little triangle shaped pieces of air drying clay. Mine are about 1/2″ long (1cm) and 0.2″ wide (0.5cm).

4. Place the bottom of the twig onto the center of one of the triangle. Place the second clay triangle on top and pinch both sides together, adhering them to the twig, to form the arrow head. Let the clay dry.
