it’s weird to think i can look right out my living room window at this rustic architectural gem, once referred to as the Long Lost Lautner, a modernist home tucked up in the echo park hills by elysian park, in my very own neighborhood. designed by mid-century architectural legend John Lautner and built in 1948, it was officially known as the Jules Salken Residence, previously lived in by just one family for decades and one of many homes lautner first designed around los angeles. it was bought by none other than fashion designer trina Turk, who’s known for her love of all things mid-century modern and together with her husband Jonathan Skow and the help of architect barbara bestor have restored this beauty on the hill to its former glory and have had it declared a historic-cultural monument. it’s recently been featured in both milk decoration and The New York Times so if you’d like more background on this beauty, check out those very interesting articles. i’ll just be down here, just below this lovely piece of L.A.’s modernist architectural history wondering if they can see me waving to them up there — or, maybe they’re waving at me!
