Drainage is an essential part of your home but it’s one part that is often neglected and overlooked until you encounter an issue.

You’ll probably first realize you have an issue when the toilet or sink starts to back up and the water to waste won’t disappear. That’s when you need to take action.

The most common cause of drainage problems is blocked pipes, although there are several reasons why your pipes may become blocked:

Incorrect products put down drains

Toilet paper and human waste are the only products that should be put down a toilet. Equally, water is the only thing that should go down the kitchen or bathroom sink. Any other products, such as wet wipes, food waste, or even children’s toys, can block the pipes. Even a partial blockage will be enough for future deposits to increase the blockage until it is complete.

That’s why you should always be careful regarding what goes down your drain.

Broken Pipes

Another common issue that will block your pipes is when they have broken. This often happens underground which can make it hard to find the issue. When the pipes split soil generally mixes with the waste and causes it to block.

Solving The Issue

To resolve the issue you need to eliminate the blockage. The first step in this process is to find a sewer camera for sale and insert it into your drains. You’ll be able to assess the condition of your drains and you’ll find the blockage. More importantly, you’ll be able to tell what is causing the blockage.

Once you know where the blockage is you can actually come at it from the other direction as this may give you a better view of the issue.

It will then be necessary to insert drain rods into your drains and maneuver them to the blockages. You have a choice of end on a drain rod, either to hook the waste and pull it back or to try and spear a hole through it.

Both methods usually work and allow you to break up the blockage, restoring normal operation.

However, if the drain is broken you’ll have no choice but to dig up the broken section and repair it. This job needs to be approached carefully as you don’t want to damage any additional sections of the pipe.

It’s worth being aware that the drains on your property are usually your responsibility, once they meet the main drain in the road the council takes over responsibility. If the blockage is that far from your home you’ll need to contact them. It could well be affecting other houses and they’ll need to take prompt action.

The best way to prevent a blocked drain is to be careful about what you place in your drain. Even small things like hair and coffee granules can bind together and cause a clog. That’s why it’s essential you stop putting waste down the sink and use your waste bin!
