For nLighten in Schiphol-Rijk, we developed a concept that directly stems from their identity and the message they want to communicate. As a data center company, nLighten operates in a high-tech world, something that was previously hardly visible in their office environment. The foundation of the new design lies in their branding, where form and atmosphere are connected to the phrase “close. coupled. connected.” The goal was to ensure that visitors and employees experience the feeling of nLighten from the moment they enter the space.
From Brand Identity to Spatial Concept
Technology forms the foundation of nLighten, and this is reflected throughout the environment. A carefully balanced colour palette, inspired by the technological character of the organisation, creates a contemporary and dynamic atmosphere. The use of high-contrast colour combinations enhances spatial clarity and visual impact, reinforcing the forward-looking identity of the brand. This experience begins at the entrance, where a highlighted zone intuitively guides visitors into the building and towards the working environment, creating a clear sense of direction and arrival.
The reception desk and surrounding elements are designed with rounded forms that create a smooth spatial flow and a strong visual connection between the different functions and areas. These shapes subtly reference the brand identity of nLighten. By applying this form language at a large scale, the reference becomes more than a graphic element; it transforms into a distinctive design statement that integrates the brand into the physical environment rather than limiting it to marketing or printed applications.
Adjacent to the highlighted circulation zone are the secondary functions—such as meeting rooms, lounge areas and flexible workspaces—which are deliberately positioned within darker zones. This contrast between light and dark is intentional: the illuminated route defines orientation and movement through the office, while the surrounding spaces provide a more focused and calm atmosphere. In this interplay, the name nLighten quite literally comes to life.
A Social Hub at the Heart of the Office
Within the office, the concept continues with a central social hub that forms the heart of the workplace, surrounded by refreshed work zones. The design introduces a contemporary layer while consciously reusing existing elements. The entrance area has been completely renewed, while the existing workstations in the office areas have been integrated into the updated design. This creates a strong dialogue between existing and new elements.
Where the work environment previously had little connection to the technological identity of nLighten, it has now evolved into a bright and contemporary workplace that clearly reflects who they are and how they operate.
Following the success of this design, we were given the opportunity to extend the concept to multiple nLighten locations across Europe, translating the core principles of the design into different contexts while maintaining a consistent brand experience.
