Inspired by shapes and movement found in nature, conceives of hospitality spaces, wellness retreats, and homes that sympathize with their surroundings. Rather than creating a barrier between outside and inside, the airy structures welcome foliage and the natural landscape into the overall experience, blurring the boundary between structure and environment.
The firm, based in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, is dedicated to building with nature, incorporating sustainable materials and taking a approach. “Imagine a home that stays cool in summer without constant air conditioning, or warm in winter with minimal heating, simply by virtue of its design,” the studio says. “This isn’t magic; it’s the intelligent application of climate responsive architecture. It’s about leveraging natural forces like sun, wind, and rain, transforming them from challenges into design opportunities.”
Recent projects include the Lotus Shala in Ubud, which takes the lotus—a symbol of purity and awakening—as inspiration for an elegantly concave wooden canopy with open sides supported by posts, so that those inside feel connected to their tropical surroundings. It’s built entirely from bamboo, which is an incredibly strong yet flexible material, allowing the team to create graceful curves complemented by geometric precision.
In Sanskrit, “shala” means “home,” and the spiritual practice of yoga is complemented by purpose-built pavilion designs that encourage harmony and calm. Pablo Luna Studio’s Manta Shala is yet another example, perched on the coastline of Nusa Penida, Indonesia, with an undulating roofline that evokes the way a manta ray’s body creates a gentle, wave-like motion as it swims.
